Any spur gear experts out there ?

That was my first thought but the shaft is fairly worn and also the steel bushing it runs in is worn, all contributing to the gear deflecting away from the rack. Any spur gear experts out there ?

Thanks guys ! I think I'm stuck with making a new gear as it's not just a gear, its actually ~ 3.625" of shaft that passes through a boss / bushing in the apron casting, ~.600" wide gear cut on the end. Shaft portion and the bushing have ~.050" of wear on them as well.

Up near the chuck is where its worn, tailstock end looks new (still factory paint on it). I'm thinking I can...

    CA-AB Drill rod/Silver steel Calgary

Quest Industrial in Calgary stocks W-1 drill rod. If I'm going to harden it, I prefer O-1 (oil hardening). I have read that A-2 warps less when hardened but any time I've looked, its considerably more expensive.
