Ottawa area BBQ and Swap Meet August 30, 2025, 11am to 3pm

Are you close to choosing a date? No pressure, but even my light social calendar can have an occasional item added and I'd prefer talking machines and metalworking than listening to chit chat between the ladies about some entertainment thingy or other.

    Really ?

w.r.t. user manuals and warnings, I saw this sign on my trip to Ireland, and I wondered... just wondered... really - your head?

    Real estate listings suck

If I want reasonable prices, I need to get well out of the city like @Warlock suggested. That needs the approval of the better half. Its also tough, in that I think I still want to be close to town, not completely out there. Proximity to family plays a role in picking a spot, otherwise I...

    Real estate listings suck

Since I started this thread I've shifted gears and I'm now researching vacant land instead for a place to build. Whole new set of issues to watch out for: zoning restrictions, setbacks, soil types and slopes, flood plains and wetlands, rights of way and easements, utilities available, nearest...

    Looking into 3d printing

Sorry, the names of these things is confusingly similar. Mine is the same as David's and Slow-poke's - an Anycubic Kobra S1 Combo (i.e. with AMS) which I abbreviated to K1C. I haven't had the time or really the need to mess with it, and actually don't want to get into the nuts and bolts of it...

    Calling all Sparky's

VFD's don't like being switched between them and the motor. If using a VFD, you need to use it to turn the lathe on and off. In my opinion the best way is to wire the motor to the VFD direct, and repurpose that switch to control the little on/off inputs on the VFD.

    7.5” gauge Challenger

Sometimes with workmanship like that its hard not to be discouraged and never try and make a model, I am fairly sure I'll never be able to accomplish that level of finish and on such a large project, I just lack the focus. At the same time, I try to take inspiration from it, that my simpler...

    Railfanning

It was discussed here a little bit, and on some of the other forums. Some have the opinion that the tolerances scale with the size and therefore it becomes near magic to have a proper injection pump that doesn't leak and doesn't bind. Me, I'm of the opinion that as long as the delivered fuel...

Benchtop Hobbing Machine - The BHM

Pardon my ignorance and maybe its been tried, and the devil is in the details, but what if you could reliably know the relationship in Z between the center line of the hob and the gear blank, and using those, and the measured diameter of the hob and blank, end up with the correct tooth cut? So...
