  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

just a gripe about can openers

You guys have electric can openers??! Wow. Does it get more decadent than that? I’m a step above the rough concrete, but still can’t find one that works properly.

Symbols used in Harold Hall’s component details

Thank you @ChazzC and @whydontu - seems obvious now, but I was wracking my brain trying to figure it out… does that mean I’ll have to tap a hole and do some milling or reaming?? I should have clued in because I did see that the concentric circles could be a plan view of the conic section...

Symbols used in Harold Hall’s component details

At the risk of announcing my ignorance but in pursuit of reducing it: What do the symbols (two concentric circles and the trapezoid) mean? They appear in most of the component details in Harold Hall’s books but I have not found any reference as to what they signify… Thanks in advance!

    Large scale Tourbillon

I’m new to this site. New too to machining. But I must say I am surprised to see any reference to the dreaded “how many hours?”. If that were a criterion for my metal working, I’d go back to my ‘job’ where I made substantially more than minimum wage and could afford to pay someone to just do it...

    Large scale Tourbillon

Amazing. I am truly in awe. What an amazing example of craftsmanship taken to artistry. How in the world did you manage to part off these tiny little gears without bending the teeth in the process. So many subtle challenges. Wow.

Our Motorcycles - Post What You Got

I’ve got two (a person needs a spoon and a fork, right?) My 2007 R1200GS from my cross-Canada trip in 2022. (I have always remembered that elementary school atlas with the map of Canada showing Mary’s Harbour. One day I said….) And my backroads bike, 2011 Honda XR650L, at the top of a local...

    Macros w Smart Phones

I was following up on someone’s (sorry, can’t recall who it was, but thanks!) posting about TrueNAS. In their sales pitch they claim that 90% of all the world’s data was created within the last two years. I wonder how much of that is cellphone pictures. BTW Is anyone else having trouble seeing...

For all of us who hate Google spying on us.....

I’ve found thrift stores very often have a box full of miscellaneous computer (power, USB, VGA etc) cords. Often a good place to drop off your extras too…

For all of us who hate Google spying on us.....

I tried one of the Roombas. Set it up, charged it up and then let it go. A few hours later, no sound, no Roomba. A search found it in under the bed in the spare bedroom with a dead battery. If it finishes vacuuming, it automatically returns to home to recharge, but they can’t program it to...

    What is more valuable?

Rhetorical question. Health is number one. If your health is bad, a broom closet is excess shop space. Besides, “Excess” shop space is like those subatomic particles. Theory says they exist, but in reality they only ever exist for nanoseconds.
