    Via Ocean

I expect trains will be a major transportation link in the future as we strive for reduced fossil fuel consumption and growing populations. Too bad the railways have eliminated rail route after rail route, often turning the land over to real estate developers. Good luck trying to acquire a...

Some people are fearless, or foolish

Years ago (I was about 16) I worked at a fence/pole plant. A customer came in to pick up his order of about 100 16 foot poles. They had just come out of the pressure treater and were saturated with water. Picking up the bundle with the front end loader brought the rear tires off the ground...

    Repair or replace?

I like the shaft collar idea. It reminds of what an old gray hair told me many decades ago: "Just do it right. You'll sleep better." It's likely the "do nothing" approach would be just fine. But...

    Repair or replace?

When assessing risk, I like to try to put things in terms I can relate to. 10 inch diameter sheave spinning at 1750 RPM means the outer edge of your sheave is doing about 50 mph. If it's 3600 RPM, it's about 100 mph. I've been hit in the forehead by a bee while doing 60 mph on a motorbike...

    Repair or replace?

Is this on a 1/2 HP drive, or a 50 HP system? 100 RPM or 7000 RPM? Is the pulley 4 inches in diameter or 40?

The collar is a great solution. As an alternative, could you thread a nut all the way on, then machine the hex away leaving your 2.5 mm diameter? The thickness of the nut could be adjusted by filing. Given the size of this, I’d be tempted to clamp it into the collet on my Dremel and use a file...

    Plasma cut quality

I bought a bunch of consumables for my 45XP, T45v torch off of AliExpress. They work fine for a fraction of the cost.

    Plasma cut quality

Why not up the amps to 45? Personally, I’d try to start at an edge or a hole. If you have to start on a flat surface, angle the torch so the slag is blown away from the cut until you get full penetration. Once you’ve got full penetration and the slag is blowing out the bottom, the start moving...

just a gripe about can openers

I read somewhere years ago that those absurdly expensive eBay items were actually storefronts for drug dealers. They agree on a deal via text messages, the auction reference is shared and the $ changes hands, product gets shipped and voila. Money laundered and transaction complete. Using it as...
