    Half-Nut Engagement

The threading dial has zero effect on the thread accuracy. It’s sole purpose is to help us synchronize the spindle to the lead screw. Thread accuracy only depends on the section of the lead screw you are presently using. E.G., if you cut a 1” long thread, your half nuts will engage in the same...

That grind looks pretty good to me. Maybe it is just the camera angle, but the first picture shows almost a negative top rake. I would try neutral (flat) or slightly positive. I would also go for a larger nose radius. Honing the cutting edge might help as well (maybe you did, I just can’t tell).

In that case, the oil should be a good quality way lubrication oil NOT gear oil. I use Shell Tonna 68 for...

    Metal lathe options

@Susquatch kind of beat me to it… good points. A 1mm depth of cut (~40 thou) [2 mm (~80 thou) off the diameter] in stainless steel seems quite aggressive to me for your lathe. The inserts should not be glowing; they are rubbing if they do. 1/2“ tooling may be too tall for that size lathe; it...

    Proximity sensors??

Would there be any optical sensors that could do the positioning? It would meet the criteria of ”no touch”.
