  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

    Most Popular Low HP VFD?

Hi Peter The braking resistor we're talking about is purely for spinning down the motor faster than inertia allows; could be used in conjunction with a proximity set-up but initially you need to get the machine in a controlled spin-down situation otherwise motor braking is relatively...

    Most Popular Low HP VFD?

hmmmm, that gave me an idea....1500w hot water heater element could be small enough (under 8in long) and enough wattage...but I have no idea what kind of resistance are across these. Engine block heater may be even better....anyone got an old/functional one kicking around?

    Most Popular Low HP VFD?

Where is a good (cheap) place to by the braking resistor from? So far I've just used the VFD internals for braking but would assume on heavy usage/quick stops that I'd be shortening the lifespan of the VFD. John: on my mill/VFD combo, you can program a multiplier within the VFD to...

    Rotary table indexer

Was wondering how your project turned out. I have a controller from Sherline that runs a small table (4") but would like to build something with a larger motor for larger tables e.g. 6 or 8"

Anyone interested in f-lock cut-off tool blades *only*?

Got my hands on some 1-1/4x4" f-lock cut-off tool blades; I've just got the blades themselves and you'd need to buy carbide inserts to fit in to them and a holder (relevant to your toolpost) to hold it. Retails $25-30ea; looking for $15 ea or 3 for $40. To give you an idea of what the full...

Morse Taper Arbors - Drawbar to Tang conversion

No worries, Don...this is NOT the Practical Machinist website where you get your @rse chewed for mentioning import equipment/tools ;) 1) The tang (tab) on the end of a Morse tape tool is used to help prevent it from spinning in it's holder and make it easier to eject 2) Let's say you have some...

    knurling....

+1 on this tool; relatively inexpensive, doesn't apply single-sided pressure and you dont even need to be centered holder-to-work to use as it 'floats' Only downside is that the shank wasn't parallel but a quick touch on the mill resolved that.

Morse Taper Arbors - Drawbar to Tang conversion

Back to Tang screw topic; measured a few MT3 pullbar arbors I have and most are 3/8-16 (or 10x1.5mm) and that also seems to be common for MT2...I do have one though that is M12x1.75. What size are people here encountering in case I grab extras...

Morse Taper Arbors - Drawbar to Tang conversion

Not a fan of 1) single guide pin design 2) "cups" that you add for size changes. Full-on individual holders w/dual guides are more rigid and you can swap the pin for a tommy bar, if you want leverage

Morse Taper Arbors - Drawbar to Tang conversion

manual holder turning = either starting the thread, backing the die off, etc... - I just thought of another use: cleaning up a thread in a confined space so not much force is required but there is no room to swing standard die holder handles...you don't need the shank to use the holders like...
