  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area.     I'm also watching this thread. I did some testing on the merits of melting some of @Janger 's chips and you've picked it up where I left off. My conclusion was that compression was required to eliminate air. I tried shielding in beer cans but that was fruitless.

    I’ve been watching the Rotometals website. They sell Babbitt in different flavours . I’ve never bought from them though, but pouring Babbitt is a bucket list item for me. My old von wyck lathe has Babbitt and I’ll probably mess with that

    Everything looks almost identical to mine. I agree with all your assessments but I think your estimate on backlash is too optimistic . I’ll be revisiting mine in a few months and I’ll be rethinking the design with rigidity being priority one.

    Is Taper Attachment worth it?

    I have this style on my Modern lathe, but I find i have issues getting the part circled in red to clamp tight enough to the ways. I get movement in two joints when moving the carriage . I suspect I have the gibs too tight but wanted to hear if others have issues .
