  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

SOURCING A VFD - WHERE DO YOU GO ?

My 10hp lathe has both a electro-mechanical brake and an external braking resistor. Its possible to have so much weight spinning that neither alone will work well. Together they are pretty good. Without the mechanical brake and external resistor, I'd get nuisance trips of the VFD when braking...

Used and abused Robin bench vise

I am not a fan of helicoils. I've put hundreds of them in and have seen issues over time. Time-Serts are much much better. But, since you have a lathe, making up a few thread inserts would also be a piece of cake. Start with a larger grade 2ish bolt and drill and tap the threaded end for your...

    Index plate .STL file wanted

The BS-2 has a MUCH more compact system than his. I suspect the reason for such long extensions has to do with the ability to back drive the index head from the mill table for spiral milling. Normally you'd have a driveshaft arrangement. I found it in another video showing his table drive setup:

Used and abused Robin bench vise

If it were me, I'd clean it very well, get any grease and oil off, grind out the areas to be welded, and the cook it in an old BBQ for and hour as hot as it'll go. Have a bunch of cool bricks handy to rest your arms on. Open BBQ , shut off heat and build it up with weld right on the BBQ. After...

    Index plate .STL file wanted

The worm drives the spindle as normal, but an extension shaft can be driven by the spindle, connected to change gears, witch in turn drives the indexing plate shaft. So instead of being in a fixed position, the index plate can actually rotate at a ratio to the spindle as the crank is turned...

SOURCING A VFD - WHERE DO YOU GO ?

On 2hp or less a simple double pole switch works well to control power to the VFD as well.

    Index plate .STL file wanted

My 1786 ongoing projects get in the way of each other. I'm going to be having a clearance sale so my projects can be other peoples projects who have the same problem as me.

    Index plate .STL file wanted

It will do spiral milling, but it will also do differential indexing so that 127 tooth gear would have been possible without messing around making new plates. I'm definitely not going to be making my own ring and pinions though. I almost put a 4bt into my 85 Toyota but other things took...
