  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Import D-Bit Grinder - What did you buy?

Do a search on this forum. I've written some posts on this exact issue but unfortunately they are rather scattered about as the subject comes up. That's because I'm essentially rebuilding substantial portions of my Accusize R8 collet D-bit grinder because - lets just say 'not so great quality'...

How to make hole for taper pin ?

That's a very good point. I 'think' 1:50 is referencing angle between center line & pin surface like in section view. So ArcTan(1/50) = 1.1457 deg = 2.2915 included angle. An M6 tapered pin (6mm big end) x 15mm long would equate to 5.4mm dia at the small end. Maybe not worth the effort of...

    Tailstock DRO

I can offer some potential reasons: - the threads in a typical TS may not be of same quality as say a leadscrew. Its not really considered the precision end of the lathe. Especially if it seen heavy drilling use (wear) which may be showing up as backlash. Now that you have an DRO on it, put the...

Tool Replacing a spring punch tip

I'm still using an O1 center punch made in high school. I have diameter sizes like 3mm, 4mm, possibly 1/8". But maybe turning it down more of a headache than other sources? Heat is pretty easy with a torch & dip in whatever oil you have laying around. Temper in oven at 475 when she's not looking :/

    DavidR8's shop shenanigans

I've been utilizing something similar for a while. Maybe you have done the same but I use an LED type bulb because they are brighter, run cool, less risk if you get a spritz of liquid which thermally shattered one of the old school bulbs. They can still break if something hits them so check if...

    Smithsonian/British Museum 3d scanned library

I was just mentioning this to a model engineering buddy. He bought a scanner & has been doing some FS engines & parts as a basis for making models of interest. Relatively fast & non destructive as long as you can get reasonably close & get the equipment orientated. My point was why don't they do...

Looking for non-US made angle grinder

Makita has drifted to Chinese outsource manufacturing on some tools. Pretty sure the palm sander I bought recently was made in China. Functionally it looks & performs well enough. Not sure what's under the hood or will it be around for 30 years like my Japan Makita tools. I'm also a bit of...

    Which operation first??

It really doesn't matter unless you are very trepid about making an error on either the ID or OD. In which case it becomes a question - what can I salvage to use the stock on another project. But lets think positive haha. Ideally the OD, ID and face should be done in one set up that way the...
