How to Clean a Granite Surface Plate?

Sorry, old memory is good for shit sometimes. Mine is actually 12x18, not 18 x 24. It just sits on a flat heavy work bench with a heavy foam mat between them to take up any irregularities. My math says that anything 18x24 or smaller doesn't really matter.

    New ceiling mounted crane?

Yours would be better Dan. Looking at how often those "actors" put their limbs at risk gives me the heevy geevys. And that safety talk gave me the creeps too. Ya, I'm gunna run out and buy a system tomorrow.... NOT!

    First crash

I think many of us would like more info on this idea Trev. Totally intriguing! How do you clamp the blade to the support? How do you stop the support from grabbing and causing all hell to break loose? Pictures? Me too, but they were not very long. I've had more success making much bigger...

How to Clean a Granite Surface Plate?

I wasn't so much interested in how hobbiests do it today or how they do it at the factory. I'd like to know what the old guys did before modern metrology. As far as how they do it today, I understand that they use 3 stones - each makes up for the other two and you work your way toward flat for...

How to Clean a Granite Surface Plate?

That's how my 18x24 is setup and for exactly the same reasons. I have a thin sheet of kitchen cutting board plastic laying on the surface too. That way I can even use the stone for small non-critical work without fear of scratching it or chipping it. When and if I ever find a Grade A 24 x 32...

How to Clean a Granite Surface Plate?

I'm keenly interested in this too! Please share as you learn. I'd WAG that they just relapped them each and every time and that was their cert method. I don't think it applies to a stone that size. It's very important for big stones. But have a good look at the bottom anyway. It won't hurt to...

How to Clean a Granite Surface Plate?

Mitutoyo recommends denatured alcohol. That's what I use. My current plate is too small - I can't get a reasonable sized pile of stuff on it. How big is it Dave? I'd love a 24 x 32 or 36. But so far I have not been able to find one that was certified and has been properly cared for. Are the...

    Drilling with the cross slide

You are correct. But since what I wanted to measure was how much the drill/reamer base moved relative to the spindle/headstock, I'm ok with that.

    Drilling with the cross slide

I thought I did mention it! But ya, minimal for sure. Your point about the relative strength of the tailstock is really the substance of my entire assessment. Everything is rubber so it does move, but not enough to matter. On the other hand, the tool post does move - and it moves enough to...

Tool I beat Tom Lipton to it!

I didn't know that Vevor made Machine skates...... Like @Stuart Samuel, I've had skates on my watch list for years. I almost had a nice set but the seller sold them right out from under me - I was really pissed because he had said he would hold them for me. At the Vevor price (plus some Vevor...
