  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

    Atkinson Differential Engine.

I have kind of run out of ideas for the time being. I believe it is because of the positioning of the pivot shafts which give a different linkage geometry to each side at any given position in the crank rotation that the distance between the piston tops is greater on the compression side than on...

    Atkinson Differential Engine.

Another update. I made the little plate and attached it to the head of the right piston. Looked a lot better on the compression stroke but when the pistons come together on the right side for the exhaust stroke they come closer together and with the plate on the right piston they contact and...

Bandit I know exactly what you are talking about. I have done some work on Detroit engines but most of my time was on Caterpillar. You have to be so careful with them, specially the engines. You need the serial number and the arrangement number because the same engine configuration is used in so...

Here is the link to the video that explains how the Atkinson engine works and shows it running. https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=Atkinson+Differential+engine#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:d543a265,vid:fgcOYEpKrMY

    Atkinson Differential Engine.

It is actually a bit like that but quite different in that it is a four stroke engine and gets all four strokes during one revolution of the crankshaft. This engine was designed to prove a theory and as far as I understand when it does run it does not make enough power to drive anything. Barely...

    Atkinson Differential Engine.

It has no cylinder head just 2 pistons in either end of the same cylinder. I did some somewhat rough calculations and if I put a .100 thick plate on top of one piston I should be able to decrease the volume of the combustion chamber when both pistons come together by about 45%. That should boost...

    Atkinson Differential Engine.

The drawings are all in fractions, so not all that accurate. There was a fellow on the HMEM forum who was looking into why so many people had trouble getting these engines to run. He found that some of the dimensions were not good and was redrawing the plans and then was machining a new engine...

    Atkinson Differential Engine.

Update #2. Well I can't change the stroke position of the right piston because it just uncovers the exhaust port when it is all the way to the right. What I can probably do is add some aluminum to the top of the piston leaving a depression in the side that passes by the exhaust port. Looks like...

    Happy Father’s Day

Thanks David and happy fathers day to all the rest of the fathers out there. I just had a nice long talk on the phone with one of my daughters. I should here from the other one later in the day.
