    Looking for an insert

@Susquatch I was very frustrated trying to understand the endless varieties of inserts and eventually decided to just duplicate a setup that seemed to be working for someone else with a similar size lathe. Re HSS and grinding, I was (and still am) interested in hand woodworking tools...

    Looking for an insert

I got some CCMT and VCMT tooling for my lathe. @gerritv was kind enough to offer a visit to his shop where he walked me through the tooling he uses regularly. He posted a link to the AliExpress store he uses and I basically replicated his order. So far, the inserts are working fine. Since...

    What machine do I have??

It appears you have an Atlas 10-F series lathe. These were made with several bed lengths and other options. Early ones, like yours, have babbit bearings. I believe the first machines all were babbit and then ball bearings ("Timken") became an option. Later, they only offered ball bearing...

    Antique lathe still in use

I don't know for certain. The tailstock looks like it was designed for that centre height but the cross-slide has quite a riser to get the compound up to the necessary elevation? I didn't get to inspect it anywhere near close enough to say. Craig

It is not my machine, but the Ontario Steam Heritage Museum has a sizeable old lathe that they use from time to time: Pictures from a 2019 visit. Craig

Are you on OldWoodworkingMachines (OWWM.org)? Their sister site, VintageMachinery.org, has some information on MacGregor Gourlay: http://www.vintagemachinery.org/mfgindex/detail.aspx?id=333&tab=0 They don't have many user-submitted photos though. Yours would be a nice addition if you were so...

    Wanted: parallels 0.1", 0.2" 0.25"

I've been working on some small parts recently and thinking that I should get a set of thin parallels. Multiple vendors seem to offer an import set of 10 pairs in 1/8" thickness. Accusize $69 CAN, for example...

How did they make this back in the day? Wooden radio knob.

I think it is more likely that the features that appear to be 'carved' on the knobs were actually made by a steel die and pressure. Same as "press back" chairs. For info, see: https://www.worthpoint.com/articles/collectibles/press-back-art-chair-decoration Craig
