  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Cyclical Mill Vibration & Power Discussion

One thought would be to run it without the belts at all. If the problem is still there, then you can focus on the motor & motor mounts. If not, then add in one belt at a time and see what happens

Cyclical Mill Vibration & Power Discussion

Based on the videos that you shared, you must have some kind of balance or alignment problem. In addition to the sound, there seems to be a visible vibration. If that's right (it is hard to be sure from the video), it is hard to give any more specific advise

Cyclical Mill Vibration & Power Discussion

Can you make a recording of the noise that you hear? Even from a cell phone? If it lets you, save in an uncompressed format (.wav) If you know the gear / pully ratio(s) in the machine, that could help you to isolate what rotating parts represent possible sources

Tips/Techniques 3 ph to single phase

To get single phase from 3 phase is trivial - just use one of the phases to get 3 phase from single phase. Analog or digital conversion. Analog is some variant on using a single phase motor to power a 3 phase generator. A purpose built rotary phase converter, or one of the home brew...

Cyclical Mill Vibration & Power Discussion

I think that there is a lot of over thinking going on here. First, is the problem a vibration in the machine? Or an unstable spindle speed? If the question is 'can bad power from the mains cause that', then the answer is yes to both. But there are limited number of ways. If you want to...

Cyclical Mill Vibration & Power Discussion

If you have had the motor off the mounts and don't see (hear) the problem, then it almost can't be the supply

Cyclical Mill Vibration & Power Discussion

I sort of assumed that he already knows that the speed of his spindle is going up and down, and is trying to figure out why. Trying to decide if it is some further mechanical problem with the motor mount or something about belts (the setup is not clear to me) or if it is an electrical problem...

Cyclical Mill Vibration & Power Discussion

I don't think that there is any way to check except via oscilloscope. AC induction motors (which you almost certainly have) can certainly be affected by changes in the input. Especially a non-sine waveform or a supply from the grid that is too small / close to its limits. Without knowing...

    Proper mill cutter and technique

Many centuries ago, the transition from written to printed books happened. This seems like a similar kind in both the increase in fidelity from what the author meant, and a decrease in the barrier to access information. but anything that you can get easily is necessarily less valued than...
