  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Will notches in a tapered seating surface affect performance too much

For wood, when I say fine I mean powder. Significantly smaller than a grain of sand. Because wood is light, particles of this size can easily float in the air. All metals are more dense, and particles of the same size don't.

Will notches in a tapered seating surface affect performance too much

For me, the fine stuff becomes airborne and gets into stuff. The big stuff just falls on the bed / floor

Will notches in a tapered seating surface affect performance too much

In my experience, it is the finest particles that are the most difficult to deal with. And it is those exact ones that the introduction of a fluid will help the most with. Oil is an effective coagulant for cellulose, so it actually makes it easier to clean up. The biggest concern is ruining...

Will notches in a tapered seating surface affect performance too much

Yes, I live in the west end of Toronto. About 10 minutes straight north of the last meet up spot in Etobicoke. I have a full time job in finance, and do much less in the shop than I would like, but if it comes up I'll take you up on that! And vise versa - if I've got it, anyone is welcome!

Will notches in a tapered seating surface affect performance too much

You can count me in on using 'metal' tools for wood too. The reverse is much harder, but carbide and HSS can cut softwood and hardwood quite well. The motion of a machine tool bit through the work is less organic then a hand controlled chisel, but it is equally possible to use those tools with...

    Shop Off-grid heating

Maybe, but it can't be less than zero, so is there a significant difference between heating to 2, 3 or 4 versus 6 or 8? In another climate, it might be worse in other seasons, but at my house in Toronto, I think fall is the worst. Because the air is still warm, but very damp, and...

    PEX hangers

In my experience the one nail clamps made it easier to avoid stress concentrations. The one point of resistance meant that the clamp would naturally find the least stress position. You do still have to position the clamps so that the PEX tube doesn't kink in between them. Mild (hairdryer)...

Galvanizing. GTA Sources, and tips and tricks

I know you said that you hate painting, but for most things is it probably both more durable and cheaper than galvanizing. Someone had to say it, so cue the boos ...

    Another Lathe...

With any of these, pay attention to how much tooling they are selling along with the machine. Tool holders are one thing, but actual chunks of HSS, carbide inserts, drill bits, centers, chucks, dogs etc. It may seem simple, but those items could be half the value

    Tool Test Bar

In that respect Wall street is both a blessing and a curse. Without to ability to raise capital, no really forward thinking engineering can be done. And the drive for better, faster and cheaper is generally appreciated by all who have to pay (including us when we buy tools or tickets etc.)...
