  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. First crash

It might be well worth your time, and a lot less damage to your wallet if you could spend a couple of hours with another machinist to see how some operations are done safely and accurately. Parting is one of those 'trial by fire' lessons at first. There are some well used and trusted books on...

    bronze bushing question

That shouldn't be a problem at all. Thats what oilites are designed for.

    Lathe test bar

The straightest rods I have found are hydraulic cylinder rods. They are also chromed and dead hard. Drill rod is nowhere near straight enough IMHO. I scrounged some from a local equipment place that services farm machinery. Cutting to length was a job though.

    Whisk(e)y, wine and cheese!

Absolutely perfect. The ageing process happens in the barrels as the tannins from the oak and peat work their magic. After bottling, there is no change at all. So theres no point in claiming a 1980 Glenmorangie is 45 years old. It isnt! If it was bottled after 12 years in oak, then it is a 12...

Tips/Techniques New head for a TAIG

Sure, no reason why not. The bearings are lubed and sealed, so there's no oil to leak. A lathe spindle would be designed very differently, using tapered roller bearings and an oil filled headstock with oil seals on both ends. :)

Tips/Techniques New head for a TAIG

I just have the shop notes which were used as a work surface. Apologies! At the lower end, the ER-20 chuck is 21.x mm diameter and appears hard while the rest of the shank is 20.00mm diameter and is soft. So I used that shoulder to fit the bearing protector against. The protector seats against...

Tips/Techniques New head for a TAIG

I bought this originally as a very basic manual mill about 20 years ago. Today it is completely pimped out, with Teknic Clearpath servos, a PlanetCNC controller, the Saunders Machine Works tooling plate bed with a dual station free vice setup and a rotary axis. All that bling came at a...

    Newbie gear cutting question

Ok so you will need an M1.5 cutter, number 4. There is no 'conversion' that will work to create an M1.5 gear from a DP cutter. 14.5 pressure angle, 21-25 refers to the range of gears it will cut. It is a #4 cutter. Your Module cutter is 20 degree PA and is incompatible with DP designated...

    Spindle square

The company is Accudyne and the product is called the EZ-TRAM. No longer made unfortunately. They had two models - the larger one is 14" diameter - the smaller was about 8" diameter IIRC. It ran me a couple of hundred about 20 years ago. Once in a blue moon I see them on eBay.
