  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

    Electric Motor experts ?

That depends on if the switch is designed for it. The motor won't have problem but as Brent pointed out, the rest of the machine may not like it because the speed change can be pretty harsh. My 15" Enterprise has a 3 position rotary mechanical switch (off - low - high) - it does not look...

First day with new carbide end mill

How much did you have sticking out? Do you have a rigid set up? At the time the end mill broke were you climb milling or conventional milling? Swarf and re-cut can give you major problems (the #1 reason for flood coolant is to move the chips away) - I assume you can't use flood coolant so an...

    Surface grinder vertical DOC specs

PeterT, do you have a surface grinder? What sort of results are you getting? An important aspect of surface grinding (and nearly every other aspect of work shop activity) is the skill of the operator. A capable operator, working with that "entry level grinder" can produce excellent results...

    VFD or Rotary ?

The transformer add on works great. I paid $100 for a good used (even tested) 6.5kVA 240-600 3 phase X-mer. Keep an eye out - they are around.

    VFD or Rotary ?

Don't overlook the PhasePerfect option (spendy - but all the benefits of the rotary, just better voltage management).

A Press-ing topic but broaching the subject- Arbor Press

I probably used about 70% of the ramp that the broach progresses (you don't want to take too much, so that the broach still starts well - no different than the shimming of the conventional holder).

    Surface grinder vertical DOC specs

My Ingar has graduation on the vertical handwheel of 0.0005". They are spaced far enough apart that it is easy to split that in half again. Hitting 0.0001" reliably right off the dial would be a trick. I can work it out to 0.0002" (that is about the limit of what I can reliably measure anyway).

A Press-ing topic but broaching the subject- Arbor Press

I had a bunch of gears to broach (~27 - they are the change gears for my spiral milling unit) - instead of shimming the broach I made up several broaching bushings that had different depth of slots. Numbered them and switched bushings as the keyway progressed - that way the broach was supported...
