  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

    Tool Mill table chucks

I made some comments in this earlier thread about purchasing / price of lathe chucks. https://canadianhobbymetalworkers.com/threads/8-inch-4-jaw-chuck-almost-brand-new-900-calgary-ab.11584/#post-160161 I was in the process of purchasing a couple 10” - 4J scroll chucks, rear mount. Now that...

    T-Slot Size vs Clamp Size?

Yes, that last thread is distorted all around.

    T-Slot Size vs Clamp Size?

I give them a heavy staking (couple locations) with a center punch - only takes a couple minutes to stake all the T-nuts in a clamp kit - could save a world of hurt later. Another option is a suitable size ball bearing, give it a good whack or squeeze - looks good and distorts that bottom...

    T-Slot Size vs Clamp Size?

First project on all my mills was to make proper fitting T-nuts, with a range of bolt sizes. I have 3 mills and a radial arm drill that have “5/8” T-slots” - every one is a bit different (that is why the clamp kits fit so poorly, they have to fit quite a range of table sizes). I don’t like...

    Tool POS Tap Guide

I also have both of the tap guide identified above - also both from KBC, easy 10 years ago. Re the “micro tap guide”, perhaps there is more to the story? There is a temptation to use it in conjunction with a T-handle tap wrench (which often have a tapered hole in the back) for small taps...

Tips/Techniques Cutting High Strength Steel Forging

I have used them, I can’t imagine not using them in a machine (in fairness I have not tried fabbing up a holder and trying out the ‘ol cordless Makita, not about to either). I run them in and old Cinci Falcon, not a particularly big machine - but typically ~3/4” holes. They are not a...

Tips/Techniques Cutting High Strength Steel Forging

Do not drill a pilot hole first, not even a center pop (the cent of the tool is not the leading edge). Suggest starting with manufacture’s speeds and feeds (I don’t recall the number but I think the recommended surface speed is typical for carbide - 300-400 ft/min).

Tips/Techniques Cutting High Strength Steel Forging

Yes, it is a drill, but with some nice additional features. I run the Kennametal ProFIX version and love it. It makes hole very fast. You can run it off center about 2-3% of hole diameter towards the periphery insert (the inner insert‘s cutting edge has to be in the forward direction if it is...

    Lathe Chuck Questions

That would be a cute little set up. I’m sure one could figure something out (I.e. use a thicker back plate). You can get that in a direct mount 6” D1-4 (PBA). Another option for a small 4J on a D1-4 mount is the half thickness 8” PB (it is less than half the weight of the 8” 4J plane back...

    Lathe Chuck Questions

What do you need a collet chuck for? There are a lot of collet systems that work well as a lathe work holding device - pretty well every system has its’ +/-. Get one that fits an actual use that you have. Don’t buy anything, until the application comes along, then buy what works for that...
