  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

    Best type of face mill?

Re-using that old arbor might cost more than replacing it (i.e. purchasing a complete assembly - whether integral or two piece). Get the face mill you want/need. Keep the arbor for some special project.

    Best type of face mill?

Since you want to fit the arbor you have - what size is it (the round section where the face mill mounts)? Also, what style mount is it (MT, R8, #40 etc)? Example, don’t try putting an 8” face mill on an R8. Also, what mill do you plan to run it on (how much power, how robust is your...

    Best 10" lathe?

Agreed, that SM1122 looks like a good candidate machine. I’m not quite as down on buying from a dealer. My first machine came from a dealer, I didn’t know the used machine market (it was 1983, I was young and didn’t feel confident I could find what I wanted, and I didn’t want to wait a long...

Moving lathe pull it completely apart?

I have taken two SM lathes down to the component level (10” Utilathe and 11” Utilathe). They are very straightforward machines. The entire lathe breaks down into pieces that one person can carry (at least it was for the 10” & 11” lathes). The base cabinet is the heaviest item - it would take...

    Chinese end mills

My Ali experiences have been good. If you buy their cheapest, then that is what you get. Don’t sweat the price (regardless it is still not very expensive) - read a bunch of the descriptions and then buy & try. I agree with the confusion of what vendor - I suspect there are only a few...

    Best 10" lathe?

I think as you have said, that if you are buying new you have lots of choice, you can spend a lot, you can spend not too much (depends on your definition of a lot or not too much), you don't have to hurry, you can change your mind (until you actually make the purchase), you can dither back and...

    Best 10" lathe?

“… the best lathe for a home machine shop”. You need to provide considerably more information. For example: what do you hope to do with the lathe, what are your hard constraints (size, weight, power), what are your must have features (i.e. spindle bore, speeds, center distance, gap or not...

    Best 10" lathe?

The HVL-H knock offs start at about $30k. Depending on the details, if you wanted, you could probably double that. Now a 10EE you may be able to get new, but it would be a little pricey (add another zero) - guessing that if you paid enough, they would tool up just for you.

    Tool Mill table chucks

My fat finger typing, obviously I’m the one getting the bill (weird that I typed that - oh well).

    Tool Mill table chucks

Okay, thank you for the heads up. Given that the chucks are coming from China, there should be import fees (when /if you get a bill, I’ll update this thread).
