  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Worth fixing up an old lathe?

If you want to read up on them a bit here’s a link… http://www.lathes.co.uk/bradford/

KBC sent me a "We Miss You" email today.....

That crossed my mind as well although I fear it may be a double-edged sword. Might get a bunch of people signing up just for a discount advantage but not giving back to support the forum. More work for the forum administrators, infrastructure, etc yet no increase in contributing members. I don’t...

KBC isn’t going to know what hit them, orders flying in from everywhere...:D

KBC sent me a "We Miss You" email today.....

Me too. I haven’t ordered anything for a while and was wondering if anything would happen — you know, suspend account, something like that. Nope, just the email offer today. Pretty decent discount, I’ll kick an order their way to say thanks. I like dealing with them. As for unusual, I get the...

Surface grinder, height gauge and a few other things.

Almost looks more like a tool and cutter grinder than a surface grinder, but what do I know. Didnt find much either although VintageMachinery turned up this from 1956-58 http://vintagemachinery.org/mfgindex/imagedetail.aspx?id=18073 -frank

Are gears with the same Diametral Pitch (DP) guranteed to mesh?

I’ve always bored or reamed to the finish diameter before cutting the teeth. I find trying to hang onto the gear with teeth afterwards is hard to get it concentric, plus the risk of buggering up the freshly cut teeth. There’s always multiple ways to do things though. Good plan on keeping the...

    Name that lathe!

Lots of things about that remind of the old Dunlap machines (often confused as Atlas) like the 109. The lead screw knob by the tailstock, v-way bed (Atlas as you know has flat ways), and even the headstock basic shape looks similar to the Dunlap/AAA lathes. I’m not understanding the gear cover...

Are gears with the same Diametral Pitch (DP) guranteed to mesh?

Interesting. I just took a peek into Machinery’s Handbook because I was rembering they had a full-size layout of a bunch of different gear teeth. They do, but they don’t say what pressure angle they are but in the text on the opposing page it went into why the 20 may be preferred over a 14-1/2...

Are gears with the same Diametral Pitch (DP) guranteed to mesh?

Huh, no idea. If I’m getting this right the existing arrangement presents a lower gear ratio resulting in a slower or smaller increment in the table movement? I don’t know why you would need that unless to lessen the chances of burying a cutter during a cut. I confess I don’t use the vertical...
