Yeah, it is really cool stuff. Makes me sad sometimes to watch those guys and recognize how much of their lives they dedicated to making that perfect product. And then “poof”, they’re gone and nobody even seems to know they were there. I’m looking forward to the one on the tea pot handle fitter...

    Reynolds museum cancellations

Speaking of making, there have been a bunch of new video releases from the Ken Hawley Trust this past week. A lot of them are fairly short — maybe 6 or 8 minutes all the way up to about half an hour — and featuring the last hand makers and fitters working in Sheffield before they disappeared...

    Tool steel state.

It looks to me like it is in the annealed state (which is what one would expect).

    Grinder Station, Part III

Thanks, I dig it too but that’s just because it has flashy red bearing seals :) Yeah I thought about the ground rail design as well but couldn’t see myself trying to level the thing every time I wanted to check a wheel. Not like I do this every day or anything, but I didn’t want to add yet...

    Grinder Station, Part I

The black plinth is my own concoction. At first it was just a rectangular block shape to raise the grinder about 1-1/2” to work with the standard rest (I wanted a certain size of turnbuckle to be finger friendly so I had to raise the motor a bit to meet that criterion and still allow me to stay...

    Grinder Station, Part I

Haha, I’ve not used the Lee Valley one but several people have and seem pleased with it. You could always spend the found money on a couple mag switches while you’re out there ;) Yes, all steel for the standard rest, just regular A36 hot rolled channel and flat bar. I didn’t have a milling...

    Grinder Station, Part I

Thanks Pete, I appreciate that. I’ve been in my shop for a quite some years now and even though it didn’t start out “perfect” it’s getting there. I’m also finding, somewhat thankfully, that I don’t need that much anymore and am really enjoying just being able to build without having to acquire...

    Grinder Station, Part III

Mostly I just eyeball to the existing angles, and if it’s too far off I’ll just correct until it looks about right. I haven’t done that many yet for it to become a problem although I could see for a specific grind one might want to make a sample to reference off of. I find that’s often easier...
