  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. Roloc Discs - Where Were You When I Was Younger?

I’ve used those Roloc discs for quite a while and they are a life saver. I saw someone using one of these the other night though and am seriously tempted. Maybe half the size of a regular die grinder and with the offset head I think would be really nice for the finer detail applications. I think...

    Welding cart build

Those are two of the shiniest tanks I’ve ever seen... :) Nice job, David. -frank

    Welding cart build

You could always suspend a small upside down salad bowl above the “backrest” and hook your welding leads up to it. Bet your neighbours would really start to wake up.... Seriously, it probably looks like a chair to you because there’s nothing in it yet. If your design intent is still solid...

A reply to the request for photos of the aluminum tooling and a few new models

The convenient thing about the pewter is it’s low melting point — around 460 degrees or something like that — so an ordinary hot plate and tin can crucible are all a person needs. Preheating the moulds was important, but the pieces my buddy was doing were quite thin and with cold moulds the...

A reply to the request for photos of the aluminum tooling and a few new models

That’s pretty nifty! We did a few pewter castings into two-piece aluminum moulds but they were machine routed. Your way is decidedly nicer — I had no idea it could be done that way. Boy, do those ashtray stands ever bring back memories... :) -frank

    Getting Started with Fusion 360

Hey Bill, don’t give up. If it’s true what they say about stimulating the brain to keep it active then there’s nothing that can beat learning a CAD programme for that. It’s the NY Times Sunday crossword crossed with Sudoku and mixed with a healthy portion of Pin the Tail on the Donkey, all in...

Tap Chuck - How do you use this?

I’m thinking that would be a Geometric Tapping Head, aka chaser. Adjustable clutch and reversing lever. Adam Booth has one or two videos where he uses his. Edit — hmm, just realizing I’ve only ever seen the Geometric used for external threading. Don’t know if it does or would work for internal...

Tap Chuck - How do you use this?

You can still get them new but not particularly cheap. Collis is a popular brand if not the most predominant (I think Skully-Jones made them too). They start around $45 for the smaller ones.

What Projects Are You Considering This Winter?

You know, to be completely honest I’m not sure. I’m 57 now, so in 2001 I was 38 years old and at work when it occurred. Or when we got the first news, put it that way. The first building had been hit by a plane, etc etc, we all know the story. Then a short time later, the second building fell...

What Projects Are You Considering This Winter?

I really should build a new fence on the one side of my property. The existing one is beyond being on last legs and I’ve been putting it off for too long. The question is, will I actually do it or get sidetracked with something more fun? On the subject of trellis, I built one a while back too —...
