  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

    Tapping stand

Yup, made mine out the top half of a 14” bandsaw I scrapped. Works nicely although I think I may add a crank handle somehow to supplement the T-handle I built it with. The table was an old lathe faceplate that I had come into somehow, it swivels on the channel iron base although most of the time...

Site slow or unreachable at times

Seems to be better the last four or five days maybe. A few times I wasn’t able to connect right away but it didn’t last long. I have Telus which can be a bit squirrelly on its own recently it seems. -frank

    Cleanup tap

I had to come up with a tap today to clean out a couple small holes. They’re on an old Singer Model 27 (circa 1909) that I’m giving a once-over to in the shop. It used to belong to my older sister but she never used it other than as a display piece so all the old oil is really dried up and...

    Lucky Anvil Find

I think you could say it’s more of a regional thing, if you want to call continents “regions”. You find this style more typically in European anvils rather than the American or English. Peddinghaus still makes their anvils in this style I believe, as does Nimba out of Port Townsend although...

Not finding that mark in my big book of anvils, but good find nevertheless. -frank

    Tailstock Taper Attachment

Instead of the bell mouth centre hole and corresponding centre I think have seen where some have used two standard centre holes with a ball bearing in between to give the flexibility for the angle. Never tried it myself, and the idea seems somewhat terrifying actually, but I think it is done in...

    Lenzkirch mantle clock

The back cover works much like the front bezel except instead of two screws it uses four small brass escutcheon pins driven in through the flange. Not a very robust method but nobody has to go in there on a regular basis like you would the front. There are a few really pitted scratch marks that...

    Lenzkirch mantle clock

I took another short week again at work so got to spend some more time on the clock. I want to get it off the bench and get on to other things (I already have but don’t tell anyone). This the movement in the case as seen from the back of the clock. You can see my modified mounting tabs with the...

    Lenzkirch mantle clock

Are they British? No, Japanese actually. I believe “hatakane” is the name — you can find lots of them out there. I got these ones from Lee Valley many moons ago, very inexpensive but handy as get-out for light weight jobs. They still sell them although I think maybe not by the Japanese name...

Looking for some brass chips(shavings) in the Calgary area.

Oh no charge Perry, if you need them that’s fine. I’ll set some aside until we figure the transport. Maybe PM me for that when you have something in mind, I’m very close to downtown Victoria if that helps. Too bad, my sister was just over to the other side this morning. -frank
