  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. Anyone fabricate Excello 602 riser?

I would be cautious about trying to slap some First mill components onto non-metric country of origin mills. While they’re clearly a Bridgeport clone, and mostly use North American hardware, there are oddball things like 1/4-20 screws with metric drive sockets (I’m sure, checked it twice) in our...

    Anyone fabricate Excello 602 riser?

First photo, right side up, overview. 15” outside diameter, 12 7/16” inside. Second photo shows interior, the shelf for the upper spider to rest on is a nice touch, I was working hard to avoid dropping it, in the end unnecessary. Third photo, upside down. 15” diameter, 4” high plus ~1/4” lip...

What to preserve during equipment refurb and how?

I talked to a laser rep (cleaning as well as welding) at Fabtech last month, and he insisted that, at least with their product, you could dial in the effect it had. I showed him some photos of outdoor lights from the Centre Block of Parliament that I'm dealing with, where there are steel, brass...

    Best outdoor paint for steel?

My experience has been that powder coat is excellent, but it’s extremely hard to get the product installed without some little chip or crack somewhere. Overtightened bolt, bumped corner, etc. We’ve taken to electroplating before powdercoat (at least a copper flash), at work, to try to maintain...

I was always quite happy with Smarts, especially the second generation. I had a Car2Go membership when that was still a thing, and I lived closer to downtown Toronto. They made excellent runabouts, especially for city driving. An ex’s parents had one (only thing that would fit down their...

    Die grinder cap

Found a piece of 1 1/4” aluminum (6061 T6), chucked it in the lathe. 3/4” through hole, bored ID to minor diameter of the thread. Tossed the threading tool in a holder, set to height, set a carriage stop to just barely clear the internal shoulder, set gearing to 18 TPI, and… turned the breaker...

    Die grinder cap

Was talking to a coworker today, and noticed a nice little die grinder in the top of his toolbox. Had a closer look, and realized it’s a Dotco! Someone gave it to him for free, but… the end cap’s missing. The male thread at the front appears to be 1 1/8”-18 UNEF. Trying to decide if I have a...
