  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. North America When You Can't Buy from McMaster-Carr

We use Spaenaur for the bulk of our fasteners at work. Worth noting that at least for us (and we’re hardly a big client) they’re willing to send ‘samples’, along the lines of 1-6 pieces. I’ve used that several times when I needed, say, two metric set screws to repair something. I have to...

    Tool How to drive taps

I’m such a boring person. I look at that and think ‘oh yeah, I keep meaning to read up on forming taps!’

Welcome to Westwood Metalworks, What is he building in there?

I'm not bothered by heights, so the few times we've had to do site work on lifts, its generally been me. Ended up in a what I'd call a spider lift (tank treads, plus six stabilizing arms) in a church (St. Paul's, on Bloor by Mount Pleasant) a few years ago, assessing some lights, and showing...

    Tool How to drive taps

Yep. If anyone ends up with a tapping head, it’s worth at least having a look at the exploded diagram, if not disassembling and servicing it, just so you’re clear on what’s going on inside. When I started at my current job, they had two Tapmatic 50x heads, but I was told one ‘didn’t work’. A...

    Tool How to drive taps

Yes, I was going to have a look at the drill presses at work, before answering, but not especially fast. The idea of running it at those speeds does give me the willies, a bit.

    Tool How to drive taps

In custom lighting, the vast majority of our fasteners are 1/4-20 or smaller. Lots of #4 screws for LEDs and similar components. We've got two Tapmatic 50x tapping heads, and I picked up a 30x used a few years ago. I'll run 4-40's in the 30x comfortably. To be fair, though, it's almost always in...

    Large Canadian grinder

We have roughly the same machine at work! Ours is running as a belt sander, with a back idler and platen set up. Works great, just a 10" x 4" buffing wheel as a drive/contact wheel.

    Tool Solid Rivets

We bought these from Spaenaur a few years ago, for some repair work. Extremely malleable.

    Miller Dynasty 280

I'm not sure I'm really pushing the limits of my Syncrowave, but it's pushing the limits of my space and the 40 amp breaker for my stove, so... :p I have to admit, I'm curious to see what options pulse and frequency settings open up. I don't expect them to make me 'the welder I ain't', but...

    Miller Dynasty 280

Yes, the forum stories about repair costs have been a big factor (well, and purchase price!) in not doing this earlier. The guy I bought it from has two more. Works as a millwright, used to take them to sites (food processing, with on site stainless welding stuff), and is very happy with them...
