    Oxy fuel brazing brass

I'm really struggling in just brazing heavy brass. It's said that the process is just the same as soldering with a torch. I tried using flux paste, as well as flux coated bronze brazing rods; and it's easy enough to bind the solder as that is all that melts; but unlike silver soldering it does...

    Casting sand

I just picked up sand casting to use for casting brass. I built a strong metal flask similar to the cast iron flasks you see on Amazon. I needed something bigger, and didn't want to go into making it out of wood and see it burn so I welded together a flask made of mild steel. Petro bond casting...

UV Resin and a custom machined cabochon for a fishing reel

That's really nice! I've never thought of putting a anything on display under a transparent cabochon. That is a great idea! Even with a real gemstone, If the clarity of the stone is clear enough, the beuty of the stone's color could realy add something to a design like an engraving underneath.

New to the group from Ont.!

Welcome from Calgary Alberta. I was fascinated by the precise machining you did for the turbillon, I also enjoy carrying out precise work with my hands. Along with my creativity that is what got me into making silver jewelry as a hobby. But my primary skills are in welding and blade smithing.

    Large scale Tourbillon

I've never thought about machining bezel settings for gemstones. All my silversmithing is soldered, other than flush set stones that sit in a hole grinded with a dimond burr. I have a lot of patience to complete long projects like this, but the complexity of this project would take me hours to...

    Blade smithing

So far I think I've done pretty good designing and cutting these more heavy duty shears. The link works well, and I can feel that the inner edges come in contact with each other when I close them. However there hasn't been any heat treatment and the straightening was done by bending and with a...

    Surfacing

For the pair of shears I'm working on, I'm trying to find the best technique to level both blades flush with each other for them to cut properly. I tried using my forge and my 20 ton hydraulic press but the surface is not left flat. I do have a backing plate attached to my belt grinder but that...

New member - Ottawa area metal caster

Welcome aboard from Calgary Alberta. I did a lot of research on metal casting before I began welding blade smithing and a bit of machining. Casting seemed to give you the most freedom in terms of Creativity, giving you the ability to turn whatever you could carve into metal. I've done a bit of...

    Blade smithing

This bur happens to have teeth on the end of the cylinder as well as the face around it. They did a much better job of grinding the hole around the link of the new bade I just cut.

    Blade smithing

Yeah that started to work a bit after I sharpened the edges of the first bit. Instead of creating too much heat by applying high pressure at high speed I ran it as slow as possible which is 500rpm. The problem then was the fact that they are brittle. The blade shattered when I applied more...
