  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Where to buy milling machine in Saskatchewan

I bought a new mill from Precision Matthew's in Pittsburgh last year. Price including shipping was less than anyone in Canada for a comparable machine. They are very customer oriented.

Tool Tooling up a milling machine

Here's my 2 cents. Don't cheap out on a vise. A generic hold down set is fine. Bangood or Ali is a good source for carbide and insert style end mills. My fairly cheap parallels are just fine.

Peter, you made me nervous that the 42 tooth gear was going to be too big to fit on the headstock/top shaft so I pulled the gear train apart and did a test fit. It fits with a couple millimeters to spare! I would have been pretty upset with myself if I cut all the teeth and the gear wouldn't...

It was long and tedious, about .0005" per stroke. Over 200 to get a .110" deep keyway

A little more prep work for machining the gears. I made an arbor that will hold the 19mm bored gear blank. It's 24mm on the end that will be in the super spacer chuck. It will be supported on the threaded end with a footstock. I still have to make a 22mm arbor for the cutter. It will also be...

Yeah I like that I rarely have to change gears. Only when doing metric. The 16 X 40 dabbler and I were looking at one day at Modern can do pretty much all metric and imperial with no change gears. I've never done pipe thread but you never know when the need may arise.

Well I feel pretty silly now. I had previously downloaded this chart from the Vertex website but forgot about it.

Perfect, thanks again. Since I have never made a gear before I want to be ready when the cutter gets here. I have a Vertex super spacer and a set of dividing plates for it. I had to brush up on using the dividing plates. Since my super spacer turns 4 degrees per revolution of the handle that...
