  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Trying to get a tire off a Ford 150

Yeah, like Hruul says - if you can air the tire up enough so that the truck will roll, loosen the lug nuts off about 1/16"-1/8" and drive it back and forth a bit. I sometimes have to do that to get corroded-on rims off heavy trucks and it works on passenger vehicles too. If you don't get too...

    Solid Toolpost Turret

A solid mount for the post has been on my mental to do list for the shop for a while. Seeing your results, as well as James Clough's results (slightly different route, but similar concept) has bumped this a few rungs up the priority list. Just need time. Around our crazy little household...

YYC - Resurface turbo exhaust manifold

@Janger - the Chrysler 5.7 Hemi manifolds each have 4 individual flanges, nothing Siamesed like an old school Chev 350 manifold. I found from experience that once you get them all into about the same plane they are fine from then on. The outer ones warp away from the heads, breaking the bolts...

YYC - Resurface turbo exhaust manifold

I have milled a number of manifolds, but before I had a mill I replaced the exhaust manifold gasket on my 2003 Dodge 2500 Hemi I used to own. I used my belt sander and some fairly rough belts (60 to 80 grit or so) and checked against a straightedge as I went. So yes, a belt sander does work to...

    Carbide Boring Bar Repair

Oh, ok, thanks for the correction - I don't have any carbide boring bars, just steel ones so wasn't aware that the heads were usually steel. Most of my stuff is cheaper imported tooling, lol. I can also now see in the picture how the carbide has a lap joint into the steel portion, but...

    Carbide Boring Bar Repair

I hadn't seen those videos, so never really thought of brazing carbide to carbide before, but overall it makes sense. With the price of tooling it makes even more sense to try making it usable again! Will be interesting to see how it holds up for you given the fact it's pretty much a butt...

    CA-AB Heat shrink connector

Used them all the time at GM when I was there 15 years ago, was the recommended wire splice method, not sure if they still are with GM. Still use them a lot at the heavy truck shop now and see them a lot on highway transport stuff. Yep, strip a bit from the end, crimp (use good quality...

    Accusize Rocks

@Degen - I'm just thankful to have my little machine tool play area, even if it took till my 40's to be able to afford it (and even doubly thankful after not being able to use it for a year due to moving!). I do agree with the statement that a true craftsman can still make good work with basic...
