  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Ontario GTA West area meetup is planned for Saturday April 26th at Greasemonkeys shop in Aylmer Ontario. If you are interested and haven’t signed up yet, click here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

    Custom Heatsinks

I've received a couple of private messages about machining these heatsinks. For anyone who cares, I uploaded a video to YouTube showing making side-1. It is unedited so watch it at double speed to reduce boredom. See

Label maker - do you have a recommendation?

Also somewhat late but... Amazon has Black Friday deals on many label makers including the Dymo 4200 and some Niibot ones. I have a Brother which I dislike but hate to buy a replacement.

    Small Facemill

I got to the shop today for some quick test cuts with my new little Accusize facemill. In 6061 at 10K rpm, 0.05 DoC and 60 ipm I get a mirror finish. A nice two foot long fantail of chips but the mill isn't straining. From the load meter I can probably double the DoC but I didn't have time to...

Unless the required holes in thin stock are really small (smaller than #55 or so) I make them with...

Tips/Techniques better suggestion for holding thin sheet metal for milling?

A little late to the discussion but I've had good results with double sided tape (https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B000QC48UU/). The tape isn't immune to letting go when heated but with small cutters heating is not much of a problem. Like MikeR, my usage is mostly for small/tiny parts perhaps...

    Small Facemill

Yes, if you include the cost of the shaft collar + my time to cut the collet pocket I was probably paid less than minimum wage.
