  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Ontario GTA West area meetup is planned for Saturday April 26th at Greasemonkeys shop in Aylmer Ontario. If you are interested and haven’t signed up yet, click here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Best Cutting Tools for Lathe Beginner

Congrats on your first cut! A minor point to further muddy the HSS/carbide insert discussion: With inserts you only need one insert holder of each flavour. You can very quickly change between inserts for aluminum, inserts for steel, inserts for interrupted cuts and... This doesn't seem a big...

Best Cutting Tools for Lathe Beginner

High positive rake inserts for aluminum (DCGT for example) have a polished, almost mirror, finish and are extremely sharp (I have the cuts to prove it!). Mystery metal is certainly a problem and I avoid such. Most of the things that I make are probably smaller than 1 cubic inch so splurging on...

Many of my holders are Glanze branded 10mm shank holders from https://www.chronos.ltd.uk/ Probably not the cheapest or the best value but decent quality.

Best Cutting Tools for Lathe Beginner

I have a Myford S7b (1985 vintage green and bought about 20 years ago). I've updated with a 1/2-hp 3 phase motor + VFD. For smaller bores I would suggest a 6mm (SCLCR06) solid carbide bar. This will handle an 8-mm bore. Look for something like https://www.ebay.ca/itm/145457026982 (I have no...

Best Cutting Tools for Lathe Beginner

It's great to see some thoughtful discussion and I suppose that I'll stick my neck out even further. I mostly turn aluminum (6061) and plastic (Delrin and some UHMW) with occasional items of 12L14 or 1144 steels. I often need short but accurate internal bores for bearings and long bores for...

Best Cutting Tools for Lathe Beginner

It may be an unpopular opinion but for a beginner I would put the HSS and brazed carbide into an inaccessible box (you might need a bit of HSS someday to grind a special trepanning cutter or something similar) and purchase appropriate insert tooling. Do you have a grinder with guides or do you...

My first ever lathe is a Myford

I've been happy with the Accusize holders. My initial purchase was many years ago from Little Machine Shop in the US but if you add exchange and shipping they are about the same cost. You mentioned "cutters"? Do you mean lumps of HSS, brazed carbide tools or insert holders? If for inserts...

My first ever lathe is a Myford

12mm easily holds a 3/8-inch tool. In my experience a 3/8-inch or a 10mm tool is more than adequate for a Myford. I have a pair (one on the compound and another on a plinth at the rear on the cross slide) of the Accusize 0xA wedge style holders on my Myford and they work well. I'm unsure what...

What is this set screw ?

For another tidbit of useless info: 1/4-24 is the thread used in a US Army cryptographic unit (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M-94) Before you ask, I started but never finished a project to make a run of accurate M94 reproductions and spent many hours measuring several original devices.
