  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest.     I have a cheap 12" vernier height gauge I can set in the cross slide, turn a part, measure height to the top of the part and subtract the radius and that's the tool height.     One of the problems I've seen by having too little clearance between the top of the compound and the bottom of the tool holder is that a chip can get trapped under it and then your tool height is wrong, if possible, I'd remove enough so there is at least a little clearance.

    It depends on your lathe, on my 14" lathe, there was only about 1/8" between the top of the compound and the Accusize 250-202. I still like that Accusize holder though because it's longer and supports the tool closer to the work.

    Taking material off the tool post isn't going to make a difference, the problem is the distance between the lathe centerline and the top of the compound slide.

    Not sure about your branch but you can't get into my local Fastenal, maybe requires a special pass or something, and they don't do one off sales, you need an account, frankly, it's easier to set up an account at McMaster-Carr and get it from there.
