  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Ontario GTA West area meetup is planned for Saturday April 26th at Greasemonkeys shop in Aylmer Ontario. If you are interested and haven’t signed up yet, click here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

    Atlas 618 "Armature Lathe"

So this brings up an interesting question (two actually) - assuming the headstock is held in place by these soft metal bearings, would one need to a) run it slow (or very slow?) and b) take very (very, very?) light cuts? We're talking under 500 rpm and DOC of .01 or less (on steel), are we...

    Atlas 618 "Armature Lathe"

Thanks everyone. My brother and I bought a milling machine together about 20 years ago but I ended up with it and he went forges, anvils and english wheels instead. He mentioned recently that he was thinking about a lathe, so I've been on the lookout for something small - like a 7x12, possibly a...

    Atlas 618 "Armature Lathe"

I just zoomed in on the photo of the lathe pamphlet and you're right on the 1st count as well; On the cover of the pamphlet, the first lathe illustration is the 618 "bench" lathe, and the ones below called "armature" lathes are marked 12A and 16A. I should have looked more closely at the...

    Atlas 618 "Armature Lathe"

I mentioned "my brother's budget" being under $500 (which as it turns out is much lower than even that) and the guy was surprisingly interested. I already have a big lathe - I was interested in this one for my brother, until you mentioned babbit bearings. How can you tell it has the older...

    Atlas 618 "Armature Lathe"

Found this cute little lathe in Oakville from a guy who collects junk left over from renovations (or possibly in lieu of payment). Says he's "waiting to clean it up" and doesn't know what it's worth. Anyone care to guess what this package is worth? It's an Atlas 618 "Armature" Lathe with...

    Sine Plate Roll Pin Enagement

As I post this link here, I realize this post (one I researched to look into slotted plates) and your youtube channel are the same guy. Here, Ross makes a sine plate like the Suburban style except he calls the slots v-grooves and mentions how difficult it is to match up the roll pins. Thanks for...

    Sine Plate Roll Pin Enagement

Thanks, I saw that video too. A Sine dresser is also an interesting idea. I saw a Yuasa radius and angle dresser going for less than $200 on ebay that looked like it could be cleaned up, but now looking at that video again, I could build a little sliding rail and do something very similar.

    Sine Plate Roll Pin Enagement

It's not clear from the 2D shot, so here's a 3D image to show the clearance for the blocks, and those little ovals on top are 45-degree drilled and counterbored holes for the screws that "suck up" the roll pins into those 90-degree corners. Only three shown because when I started working on the...

    Sine Plate Roll Pin Enagement

Actually, thanks, I watched that video some time ago (part of the reason I'm getting interested in sine bars). His straight shoulders are very easy to dress square and as he annotates, they are easy to get on target for both height and distance. That is what I was alluding to in my first image...

    Sine Plate Roll Pin Enagement

Wow. No comments at all? If this were the Machinist page on Facebook, I'd have 149 highly opinionated remarks, 17 put-downs, 6 guys flaming each other over lord-knows-what, 3 memes, and and at least 2 pictures of women's breasts by now. Are we Canadians really so shy? TLDR?
