Shaper vise - How big is too big?

Yes of course! It’ll be a rebuild, but I don’t plan on repainting it so restore might be overselling it ;)

Shaper vise - How big is too big?

I pulled the trigger. Shipping ended up being even slightly less after the seller confirmed the dimensions of the skid he put the vise on. All in for $460. Fingers crossed

Shaper vise - How big is too big?

Manitoulin says its a 4-5 day delivery. I'm planning on doing a full teardown of the shaper anyways to clean out all the old yucky oil, so I'm probably 4-6 weeks away from making chips anyways!

Shaper vise - How big is too big?

Manitoulin quoted $220 for me, which is the best price I've got an invoice for so far. That seems reasonable to me? Do you think you would get it much cheaper than that? LOL. EDIT: $220 is the quote if I pick the vise up from their shipping depot (which I requested for the above quote), it...

Shaper vise - How big is too big?

How low would you expect you could get for a 300 lb vise? lol EDIT: Quotes are back up to $400-ish

Shaper vise - How big is too big?

Thanks for your input, the loss of vertical space makes a lot of sense as to why one wouldn't want a taller vise. This 14" vise looks to be about 7.5" to the top of the jaws with the swivel. @Degen thanks for the tip. I'm getting a quick quote of $200 CAD via Fedex Freight, which seems to good...

Shaper vise - How big is too big?

Well the other appealing aspect of this comically large vise is that it would potentially allow the shaper to provide me with some extra utility over my bridgeport. My bridgeport only has a 32in wide table, and because the saddle is 20" wide, that only leaves 12in of available x-axis travel...

    Colchester Student 1800 govdeals auction

Maybe someone was trying to cut metric threads on an imperial lead screw and didn't realize you can't disengage the power feed? I'd be all over this if I didn't just deplete my tooling budget lol

Shaper vise - How big is too big?

So in a moment of drowsy uncertainty at 2:00am last night, I submitted an offer to purchase this absolute unit of a shaper vise on ebay, as the seller only had it listed for $250 CAD, and the seller happens to be in Canada, in Scarborough, ON. The seller is now working on an estimate for freight...
