    DavidR8's shop shenanigans

The old vf5 was the worst of the vf series at 7" nose to table. Didn't realize that until it was on the floor, and made it almost impossible to do any plate work. 4" isn't too bad when you factor in holder lengths etc, 7" was just unworkable.

    Grinder nut keeper

When you switch to a wire wheel on a grinder, you don't use the nut. You can either put it on the bench, a peg on the wall, pocket, etc.....Or in this case, keep it with the tool, so that when you switch back to a disc, it's right there where you need it.

    Grinder nut keeper

Ill start off by saying this is NOT my idea. Wish I could remember whose, but I ran across it a couple weeks ago on Instagram and thought it was genius. Finally made my own... Not much to it. In this case I just cut off a 5/8-11 bolt. Made a simple pot chuck out of a nut, by slicing...

Welcome to Westwood Metalworks, What is he building in there?

The little Jacobs chuck i picked up at the pickering tool show last week had a short stub arbor attached. It was in poor shape and bent. I made up (modified existing?) Some wedges from small beam cutoffs and pressed it off after tigging a nut on the end. Last pic shows my previous one...

    Worth picking up a mill/drill?

I would pass too. Same reason as Mcgyver. Define your goals, do you want to build and make things, or to you want to have a shop full of tools that all provide overlapping capabilities and take up space for projects. For me, it's purely make things. I could have had a nice 10" atlas lathe...

Tools of the Trades, Oct 6, 2024, Pickering Ontario

It's called a Planer gauge. Primarily used for setting and comparing tool heights on planers/shapers. Pretty much an obsolete tool, but one of those I've always wanted to pickup. Not that I have a big use for one, I just like them. This one is a shop made one, and is actually pretty well made...

    Hot rolled and pickled

Never used hrpo, but i can certainly see some benefits to it. My favourite way to deal with millscale are these discs https://a.co/d/h2SLlYX Once you get "under" an edge with them the mill scale just peels up. Messy though.....an outside job for sure. They don't last forever, but longer...
