  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Ontario GTA West area meetup is planned for Saturday April 26th at Greasemonkeys shop in Aylmer Ontario. If you are interested and haven’t signed up yet, click here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

    Identifying an odd thread.

To get the pitch on both internal & external threads I’ve used a piece of paper to make a rubbing. For internal threads, I make a tube of paper and roll it out and expand it to fit. The rubbing works great with a caliper and magnifying glass to get an accurate pitch measurement. I’ve measured...

When the machining doesn't go according to plan...

One characteristic of really good fabricators I’ve worked with (welders/machinists/carpenters) is the ability to execute the work in such a way that the tolerances (intentional, systemic, accidental) of each component can all be taken into account on the final piece they fit or fabricate. I...

    Something off with Vevor

My 2 cents: I suspect UPS takes possession after it arrives in North America. I can imagine a pissing match trying to prove it was undamaged when UPS received it. Still, your deal with Vevor was for a product delivered to you. They chose the shipper. Any dispute should be between Vevor & UPS...

    DRO install on my RF30

Watching… Nice clean installation. Looks very similar to what I’d likely need. Does the x-axis scale doesn’t interfere with y-axis range? It looks like it sticks out front by quite a bit. Just concerned there’d be interference that would restrict outward movement o& the table…

Question on grinding Tungsten for TIG

Slightly tangential to the original topic: What material is the grinding wheel/blade/bit you use for your electrodes? I have an 80 grit 6” aluminum oxide wheel I’ve been using, mostly because it’s surplus and the cheapest of the wheels I have available. But the electrodes chew through the stone...

Question on grinding Tungsten for TIG

Thoriated tungsten is the radioactive one - a mask while grinding is recommended. I'm sure the others are not great for you either, but at least you shouldn't glow in the dark.

Netflix price increase at wrong time entirely

We dropped Netflix after their last big price jump. What was that, 6 months ago? I was surprised to hear about this round of price increases. Not trivial increases, but I expect it will have a big impact. Lotsa people are struggling. Mind you, it could well be a push to get more people into...

    Peavey Mart Closing

Sad news indeed. We just recently got a Peavey Mart (Salmon Arm, BC). It has been great to have one local. One of the last places you can go, v-belt in hand and compare it to the new ones hanging on the wall. Previously, it was a 60 mile trip to visit one. Unfortunately, heard today that it’s...
