  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Ontario GTA West area meetup is planned for Saturday April 26th at Greasemonkeys shop in Aylmer Ontario. If you are interested and haven’t signed up yet, click here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

The RPM of this 7 x14 550w mini lathe is 50 - 2500 RPM, and the torque of the motor is 3/4 HP. On some reviews I watched on this machine, they tested the RPM of the original 3 jaw chuck without any stock and measured 2800 RPM. I ordered and installed a four jaw chuck of the same diameter (100mm)...

All the blanks I've received from Amazon come with a slight angle on both ends in one direction which I see you used for your side relief. The top I can tell is slightly concave with a curved positive edge, but because of the camera angle on the second picture, I can't tell for sure if the end...

That's a good point, this SS round stock is pretty heavy. The diameter is 1.25"/1', it was probably what first caused the belt to start slipping before I tightened it. My new tool had no trouble cutting the brass, leaving a very clean finish, and started cutting the SS fairly well at a lower...

Here are some photos of the next tool I just ginded. The angles are much more shallow and even but the stainless steel still pushed the edge back. The angle is very obtuse but I did sharpen it till I could feel a sharp edge on the tip.

This is most likely what I am doing wrong. My tool is ground with a much steeper side relief and front relief than what you drew. I'll take a picture of my tool now, and regrind it with more shallow relief angles.

Yeah I started reading a book called Metal Lathe For Home Machinists by Harold Hall before I purchased the Lathe. I haven't really read too much of it. Pretty much just the operation of the machine, different parts of it, and the use of different tools.

What I was saying is how the geometry of a tool could guide the tool forward automatically without any mechanical feed if the tip was slightly curved forward. What you are describing is the settings of the chuck and the feed rate to keep the tool cutting at the perfect rate to create clean cuts...

Your pictures give a good idea of how much of an angel is needed to cut the metal causing it to curl. I was thinking about the geometry of a sharp knife that would leave long straight strings with the blade following through the metal over one rotation.

What you see in that video is what I had in mind. It is only showing the progress of the tool after it has pierced the metal. Like I said in the comment above about the only point at which the tool cuts towards the chuck is when it moves forward or progresses into the next layer of material...
