  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Ontario GTA West area meetup is planned for Saturday April 26th at Greasemonkeys shop in Aylmer Ontario. If you are interested and haven’t signed up yet, click here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

    Tubing roller

That makes sense, just the same idea as a hydraulic press with the use of three round dies.

Calgary & area meet up Spring 2024.

I would definitely attend. If the date remains the same I will try to keep anything else out. I could bring some of my newest knives. I have put quite a bit more into every knife including the laser engraving.

    Blade smithing

I received a request from a former co-worker for a custom made cleaver. The blade isn't as thick as some heavy cleavers that weigh up to 2 pounds but the metallurgy (CPM Magnacut) and heat treatment gives it high enough edge retention and wear resistance to break rib bones without the blade...

    Heat Treating

Typically carbon steels are just austenized to temperatures where they bcome non magnetic and quenched in oil, since water will cause cracking. It is tempering that requires more precision when using a forge for heat treatment. Blades are tempered twice for 2 hours if you use a high temperature...

    Metal lathe options

Yeah, the lathe is useful for fabricating custom hardware/ components. My dewalt die grinder was manufactured with the wrong collet body so it couldn't fit the collets that you buy for this model. The threads on the shaft that hold the collet body are not the same as the correct collet body, so...

I made this dial with my plasma table, and etched it with the laser engraver. The numbers are actually very accurate following the readings of the hand held tachometer that VicHobbyGuy mentioned. The dial is 270 degrees and divided by ten for every number. The first 27 degrees led to 200 rpm but...

    Metal lathe options

Sorry I haven't been around lately, I've been a bit busy with some maintenance around the shop. I just received some new carbide tools and new cutting oil. I don't want to damage these tools like I most likely did to the first few that I used on the lathe, though they still work well. The shanks...

    Metal lathe options

That makes sense, as I measure the RPM with the tach I can mark the different positions of the knob as a faster way of setting the RPM. The occasions that I think it would be most important is when threading, and when turning the cross slide along with the auto feed, since the auto feed depends...

That is a good simple solution to keep track of the RPM. The machine does not have any display. I was thinking about using a simple speedometer that works with a hall sensor and magnet, but they probably aren't designed to process the data fast enough for something that spins this fast.
