  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Ontario GTA West area meetup is planned for Saturday April 26th at Greasemonkeys shop in Aylmer Ontario. If you are interested and haven’t signed up yet, click here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. Using air in the shop is similar to using a pressure washer on a machine. I would cringe when fellow dirt bikers would go at the mud on their bikes - full blast on the suspension components. In those areas, I only used garden hose pressure and was careful even with it. As Dan said - when used...

Welcome to Westwood Metalworks, What is he building in there?

I appreciate your comments. This design concept is far from complete, lots of bugs to work out. Yet I'm glad you don't see any show-stoppers. The two main focuses were to: make it a bit more compact; and to incorporate an easy-to-change pair of step pulleys. I'd likely use 4 steps on the pulleys...

These have a variety of names -tool makers vise is most common I think. They are often an apprentice's assignment or project. They come in a variety of slightly different configurations. I have a couple: The one on the left has a pin that can quickly skip (leap frog) to a new location - but...

@Dan Dubeau starting this discussion, so IMO moving it to a separate thread is up to him. I don’t have much to add to my mid-mounted motor idea, it’s just a concept. I want to evaluate my 1”x42” JET (it does not get delivered until Easter). I’ll not be building a 72” grinder unless I feel like...

“Consider a new thread Craig.“ It’s just a concept, not a project “ How do you get the belt around the motor?” Sanding belt and drive belt go on from same side - see revised sketch (edit) below: Switching front wheel for a smaller wheel or vertical surface platon is the same as a regular...

As I’d mentioned above - a few months ago I had thought about building a 72” belt sander/grinder. It was just rattling around in my head, nothing on paper. I say paper cause I don’t do CAD (I took a couple intro courses but it never stuck, so paper is my best friend). Anyhow, @Dan Dubeau the...

caution - those wire brushes/wheels are VERY aggressive and DEMAND respect!

I too like those Scotchbrites. Here's a collection of the angle grinder accessories I use:

Welcome to Westwood Metalworks, What is he building in there?

I've seen (guess) that you are well into your "building a belt grinder project". I'd love to have a 72" belt grinder. I thought about buying a $1,200 Vevor 72" grinder or doing a DIY build, but I don't know: why I need one, where I'd put it; and when the money tree will bear enough fruit. But...
