  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Ontario GTA West area meetup is planned for Saturday April 26th at Greasemonkeys shop in Aylmer Ontario. If you are interested and haven’t signed up yet, click here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

I've never purchased Hemingway plans, but I have purchased a lot of boat plans. They all had a 'license' to allow building of only one copy of the boat. If I wanted to build another, an addition fee needed to be paid. Perhaps it would clear this up in short order if you get a note from Hemingway...

I don't know how slowly @Chris Cramer can get his lathe to turn effectively. My Vevor 7x14 0-2500 RPM lathe (without the Hi-Lo transmission the Sieg lathes have) wouldn't turn steadily at low RPM. I found this 'feeds and speeds' chart from Tom's Techniques really useful...

Most 7x lathes don't have enough torque- especially at low RPM- to cut with a very large nose radius. So, I agree that the radius should be larger (a point won't be as tough) but moderation is the key IMO. A few swipes on a diamond hone to round the point a bit, are all that it takes for me.

I don't know why that would hurt, actually. I probably need to adjust my ideas about 'hobby metal work' (I think of Elmer Verberg in his basement or the Brit guys making their railway engines) and 'big' metalworking machines. @Bandit has clarified that even a 16" swing lathe is not big. :) As...

I hope that we don't all think that it's OK to steal something if we think it is too expensive. I thought most forums had policies about intellectual property, copyright, etc...

My 'other lathe' is also a small lathe (by CHMW standards), a 10x24 Logan. It's powered by a 1/2 HP 1725 RPM single phase AC motor. On the lowest RPM belt setup and especailly if the back gears are engaged, there just isn't much that would stop it. I upgraded the DC motor on my 7x lathe (to...

I don't know you, but I think you don't have 'the right mindset' for a 7x, especially for most Vevor machines.. :) Yes, as I said, that's what gets used. The same as on the Logan 200/210. Not like 'better' lathes which have two ways of moving the carriage with power, and folks don't put...

Those angles -aside from the back rake- don't seem that all that far from the ones in this chart from LMS: That said, I've never had good luck with tools with much back rake, on my 7x lathe. I leave my HSS tools 'flat-top'.

You won't hear anybody saying that over at the 7x groups. :) CHMW is a 'Bridgeport and big lathe, or working up to it' sort of place.
