  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Ontario GTA West area meetup is planned for Saturday April 26th at Greasemonkeys shop in Aylmer Ontario. If you are interested and haven’t signed up yet, click here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. die holders

Nice. I like the idea of the handles held in by set screws on flats. It seems that the screw-in handles on all my dies holders are always unscrewing while I use them.

    VFD Discussion

To understand how the VFD and motor interact, you first need to think about a few things about how 3-phase induction motors work. An induction motor works by creating a rotating magnetic field with the field windings. That is done by alternating the phases that power each winding. So, if the...

    VFD Discussion

Over on another thread Tom Kitta said: I thought I'd reply in a separate thread since I can see this discussion going off in its own direction. I have not yet tried my VFD, although the person I got it from (my cousin) tested it and it apparently works. To answer some of the above questions...

    My "New" Lathe

With the studs sticking out it is easy to move the t-nuts and position the vice onto the studs, so the spacers are not really required in my case. They are a cool idea though. My curved t-nuts go in from the bottom via a slot that you can't really see in the previous photos. In this image I...

    Lathe and Mill Tooling

Congratulations Geoff, this is all really impressive work. I need to take on some inspiration from these projects! I'll be back to the thread in the future! All the tooling is better than nearly free. Not only did you not have to pay taxes on the money you would have had to earn to buy this...

    My "New" Lathe

Here is another minor issue and the fix my lathe got a couple of weeks ago: The curved t-nuts that hold the vice to the cross slide were both cracked and a bit bent from over-tightening over the years. Here are the old nuts on top of a piece of hot rolled scrap that has already been through...

    New Firepower TIG/Stick welder

That is nicely organized. I will think of it every time I'm stepping over the octopus of welding stuff in the corner of my shop.

    My "New" Lathe

My current lathe and mill were purchased new about 7-8 years ago, so I knew their condition. With this lathe I quickly decided that although I wanted a larger lathe, I didn't want a beater, and I've just got sucked into the TLC vortex. I'm having fun though, and it is cheap entertainment in the...

    My "New" Lathe

Thanks. Or at least my lifetime. The machine is already older than I have left!

    My "New" Lathe

And now to cut the teeth . . . . I installed a huge number of fluorescent lights in my shop and the mill is right in front of a window, but it seems there is still not enough light for my old eyes. I mounted up my 6" rotary table and the new arbour and involute gear cutter on my mill. I...
