Oops! How low can you run an Argon gas cylinder and still TIG weld?

Oh, ok. I can't hurt the torch or the inverter machine? At worst, wreck the weld and the end of the Tungsten? Jim G

What do the markings on this steel plate tell me?

So I should NOT belt sand it? Leave the brown finish layer on it, whatever it is? I just want to ensure that: - It is non-toxic when heated up - Not some kind of coating that presents any fire hazard - Will not contaminate a weld being done using it as a table surface I'm thrilled to have...

What do the markings on this steel plate tell me?

Thank-you both, Guys! IF the "HT" refers to heat treating, what effects wouldthe heat treating have on this 44W steel? I realize that heat treating is generally done to strengthen and/or harden steel or to give it a tougher surface, but what I am asking is what potnetial effects, if any, would...

Oops! How low can you run an Argon gas cylinder and still TIG weld?

I have been learning to TIG weld, using my first fill of Argon gas in an 80 cu ft cylinder. It started of course at 2000 psi, but is now down to about 550 psi. When I called to arrange to pick up a refill, the local gas supply shop told me it had a missed delivery his week, and so had NO Argon...

What do the markings on this steel plate tell me?

Below is a photo of the leftover 3/8" thick 19" diameter steel plate that my local steel supplier sold me to use as a welding table top for small projects. What do the "44W" and "HT #425107 tell me about the properties of this piece of steel? And, is the surface just a rust layer or...

Why a plastic coating on a weld fixture??

I ordered a 90 degree adjustable weld clamp/fixture off Amazon.ca, and noticed later that the device apparently has a plastic coating applied as an anti-rust measure. It seems to me that a plastic coating on a weld fixture has a high probability of melting or at least heating up and giving off...

First "lunchbox size" plasma cutter experience

I get scared just LOOKING at the photo of that tool! I'm probably prejudiced after having a plant worker many years ago insert his hand into a rubber calendaring machine and squashing and then amputating his hand and forearm as a result. I had to pick up his wife and drive her to the hospital...

First "lunchbox size" plasma cutter experience

Yes, I can see safely bevelling the LONG 6" side of the coupon on my router table IF I can push it through along the fence using my high tech yellow push block with friction bottom surface AND rear anti-kickback paddles, but never by hand only. And, I would NOT try the short 3 inch side. Jim G
