    Next on the agenda...

A couple of buddies bought a sawmill a few years back. It was cutting all sorts of wonky. I went out and found the blade guides all worn and the one guide mounting arm was bent. I threw an indicator on the base and ran the head/blade over and found .100 of change from the front of the teeth...

    L00 backing plate

It was a fun project. Lucky for me there was no time crunch so that helped. Just getting the machining sequence figured out and the taper cut with the threads in one setup was the tricky part. Alot of steel to remove though. Getting it roughed down to size took a bit of time.

    L00 backing plate

Finally got back to working ont the backing plate. I machined up a tapered arbor and machined a slot for my 3/8 keyway broach. She was pretty tall so had to use my hydraulic press as it wouldn't fit in the arbor press. Alot of pumping to get it cut and alot of shims to get the depth needed...

    L00 backing plate

Im the common denominator lol. The outer diameter and facing went great. Threading, beautifully. When I started using the cross slide with boring bar (Dorian MWLNR), I just could not get it to stop chattering. Tried different speeds and feeds, changed inserts, slight adjustments on the tool...

    L00 backing plate

Was asked to machine up a backing plate for a buddies Clausing lathe so he could mount a 3 jaw on it (It only came with a 4 jaw). Rough machined the plate to about 0.050” over, then cut the tapered bore after tramming the compound slide and finished with the threads. Wasn’t happy with the...
