    AAAAAAAannnnnnnnnd my guess was wrong :) Found a few of these gauges without the reverse numbers on it like yours but still has the notch Boley Style Gauge In this video they just use it to hook their thumb nail into it.

    Correction. Upside down. When I said 6 i meant 9 :) And if there is a 10 it would be zero then on the scale.

    Well the scale has some numbers reversed on it. So maxes at 6 when fully closed. When that scale is at 0 (Fully open) does that notch line up with the end of the caliper? Just wondering if it was meant to catch and stretch something maybe?

    Shim material

    Doesn't directly answer your question but figured I would share. When I need small but precise shims. I waited until PA does a sale on their feeler gauge set. Bought a couple of them and then I take it apart and use them as shims :) Worked GLORIOUSLY for me when I was shimming my round column mill.
