Nice: Any chance of buying a few small pieces?

    Homemade cabbing machine from scrap.

I have a piece of 1" 304 stainless. It's what I'm going to use for the cabbing machine shaft. I can't see how 1018 wouldn't rust because the coolant used in a cabbing machine is water. I might get away with 1018 in my slab saw because the coolant is oil. The ideal solution would be to find out...

    Homemade cabbing machine from scrap.

I have the shaft and it's a piece of 1" 304. It does seem to have about .002 of runout. Hopefully it will be ok. I has hoping to find a 1/2 HP motor but ended up with a 1 HP 3 phase one that I'm going to use. I do have a 16" slabbing saw. If you get one I highly recommend putting it on a stand...

    Homemade cabbing machine from scrap.

Nice: I plan on making one of these later this year. I bought a used set of wheels that were about 1/3 of life used. Do you know what the metal is that you used for the main shaft? I was planning on putting a bearing on each outboard end also so 4 in total. After that I need to make a trim saw.

    Question about casting bronze

I was thinking about doing something like that. I have easy access to aluminum cut offs. I'm on the road for work now so don't have access to the plans to be 100% sure about the bearing surface. I know for sure the crankshaft goes through the center bore. The rest just supports the bearing. From...

Other Shop footwear - what's on your feet?

I wear old new balance sneakers Ones that are too worn to wear in public. I'm not against safety shoes or boots but I have never found any that did not cause a lot of knee pain within a few hours. If I'm handling heavy stuff I do usually put on steel toed sneakers.

    Question about casting bronze

Unfortunately due to the odd shape of the bearing I can't as far as I know modify an existing one. I probably won't want to go so far as to make my own casting equipment. I think it's likely I can find someone in my part of Canada who can melt some metal. I'm just hoping to make a round slug so...

    Question about casting bronze

The ingot idea is a good one if starting from scratch. I was hoping to use the recovered chips because the last time my friend did a particular job he had several buckets of chips from turning bearing bronze. I can get used bushings from work. They are made from a high quality bronze. I looked...

    Question about casting bronze

I don't think all bronze is sintered. This bearing will be in a chamber with lots of oil so I don't think it would need to be self oiling like a sintered bearing is.

    Question about casting bronze

I recently looked up some prices for round bearing bronze and wow is it expensive. I occasionally have access to some bearing bronze that is left over from turnings. Would it be practical to melt it down and cast it into slugs? How difficult is it to avoid it being too porous to use? I have...
