  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Tool I beat Tom Lipton to it!

I have a set of the vevor skates and have used them a fair bit. I find that when loaded they really want to track straight in whatever direction they are pointing and do not want to turn. Not sure if it is too much friction from the poly wheels or the bearing for the rotating platform. This...

    Wild Honey Bee Swarm

I am a hobby beekeeper and if it was a different day I would make the drive your way to try and catch it but unfortunately I can’t today. Is the swarm still there? They don’t often stick around long. You can try to find someone to catch the swarm at one of these sites...

Calculate proper radius for scalloping with boring head

Anytime. If you need higher accuracy you can do the same thing with gage blocks. Create a stack the size you need with larger blocks on either side. Clamp them all together and place an indicator on the stack. Do the same thing with the boring head between the two larger blocks and manual turn...

Calculate proper radius for scalloping with boring head

You could use two 1-2-3 blocks loose in a vise. Place the boring head centred between the two blocks. Manually turn the boring head so it pushes both blocks laterally. Measure the distance between the blocks. Should get you close enough.

    H2D?

That is what I do today. Now instead of the very minimal risk of a print failing at a late stage, I have a much higher chance of the dovetail joint being too tight or too loose resulting in multiple prints that were 27hr+ each being scrap. Plus the cosmetic impact of the joint. It’s a workable...

    H2D?

I have a 10w laser and 3d printer. For what I use it for, which is cutting things out of thin sheet stock it works fine. The H3D camera based alignment as well as automatic 3d scanning and profiling to laser onto curved surfaces are really nice features not found on cheaper 2D lasers. So while...

    Need Fastener Engineer Skill Set

A couple of thoughts. The original design the bolts can be removed and the valve could be slid between the two flanges. If you have studs sticking out through the flanges it would be trapped and necessitate further disassembly of the system to replace. Not sure if this is an issue or not for...

What to use to seal oil site glasses?

Mine is a 1939 Sundstrand. These should be the correct ones for you then. As you can see I have lots, I had to buy a 100pack as a minimum qty. I am in Woodstock Ontario or I can throw some in an envelope for you if you want. Just PM me. I also found a source of replacement glass through...

What to use to seal oil site glasses?

Restoring my 10ee it called for square cut o-rings. I just ordered a bunch from McMaster-Carr in the appropriate size. There is no groove or anything for the O-ring it is just sandwiched between the glass and housing. What size diameter are you looking for? I have a bunch extra if you can use...

Anybody with a 40W+ laser in Calgary?

make sure you are comparing optical power. A lot of the cheaper lasers are using electrical power in their advertisements. 40w is typically about a 5w optical power. Actual 40w output diode laser will be pricey similar to what David just posted.

    Laser Cutter/Engraver

I did until this past weekend when it caught on fire and self destructed. Luckily I had it sitting on a table outside for both smoke and fire risk reasons. Mine saw use mostly for gaskets. Scan the surface of whatever part alongside a scale/ruler. Then open the image in cad software, scale it...

Question for those with multi-extruder printers

Look into your retraction settings. Try printing a retraction calibration print to dial them in. Retraction pull the filament back before a move so you do not see the stringing you are talking about. Certain materials are better than others too. Honestly the default retraction settings usually...

Tips/Techniques Looking for easy removable thread locker

Some good suggestions here. Maybe look at Loctite 567 as well. It’s essentially liquid Teflon tape.

    Tool N2M engravers ball vice

Can you just make one? Weld up your own T-handle chuck key using four pieces of bar stock to create the 3/16 square then turn the outside to the 3/8 round? I am jealous of the ball vise. I have been wanting to try engraving for a couple of years now. Bought a few books and have done a bit of...
