  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Looking for some opinions from those of you how rebuilt a head stock

I did not do the condor head climb / hike but given descriptions of mountains from over 20 years ago and what I seen there has been very little change. Around La Paz I did two mountains - Huyana Potosi as well as Illimani. For example, on Huscaran on the left side from 2003 description glacier...

    Tool Coaxial indicator

I use mine at least 10 times a year. It is super easy to get a center. Sure they take a ton of Z space. But with power feed on Z its not that bad.

    Stores that still Price Match?

HD and Lowes / Rona price match each other no issue. I don't even know where local CT is and have not been to Walmart in years. I have not been to BB in a decade - not sure they are still in business.

Looking for some opinions from those of you how rebuilt a head stock

Yes, 5 in Bolivia and 1 in Peru. I tried for the 7th one - Huscaran in Peru but got sick - actual cold - at the time I though I got altitude sickness but it was a cold. Still have some left over cough. It is too bad I turned around just past camp 1 - at around 5450m as at the same time two...

Modern tool is done for. Family decided that after death of the founder they don't feel like running the company. They are to be auctioned off in less than a month. Yeah that free lathe had a lot more issues then just that clutch system. It had random electrical issues + the whole thread / feed...

    2x72 grinder discussion

Yeah I have home build grinder but a fixed table - I also have surface grinder and T&CG. I discovered it is important to have good belts.

Need to get drill bits for tapping

My go to set is made by Dewalt. I also have Norsman and few other somewhat good brands. The cheap stuff is easy to spot - it does not drill well or at all anything that is made of harder steel.

So the X / Y table is to have some kind of semi precise surface grinder?

    Shop Dangerous shop lights

The problem is rampant consumerism and race to the bottom. Cheapest product sells! So manufacturers cut more and more corners. Products are designed to last for long enough to not be returnable. Wire gages are dam scary - there is just enough copper there to run at 50% duty! Princess...

    Used Carbide EM sale

I got around 100 lbs or so of scrap carbide. Been sorting it for a while. I am hoping to sell some of it for $20 per lbs. The sold EM are not broken they just have usually a nick on the very top and would need a touch-up for good work. This is the left most pile. Above it are large EM that may...

iPhone to Android - phone recommendations?

Yes, it helps to keep the battery between 20 - 80 percent and keep it ideally at 50%. Even better... don't use your phone ;) You guys do know you can exchange the battery in your phones, right? It is not super trivial but not a big deal. Usually does not pay as your 3 year old phone is not...

iPhone to Android - phone recommendations?

I got my phone (Google Pixel) for free (yes actually free) from Virgin mobile. Otherwise I would go for Chinese phone but FREE is a good deal. I got the same service as with Koodoo for touch less money and phone for free (over $600) on 2 year contract. So I would go for a free phone. I would...

Machine Video of a healthy (?) Kopp variator

Yeah maybe I gave it away by saying set screw. There was around 1/2" looseness and it was bouncing around causing the rattle. At higher speeds I guess it had not time to move back and forth and thus there was less noise.
