    Tilley Tuff Utility pants

That would be Marks WORK Wearhouse?? I used to spend a lot of money at Marks until the bean counters took control. It was great in the beginning, I could buy tall sizes (6’ - 4”) that I couldn’t buy anywhere else at surprisingly low prices but since the bean counters took control they seem...

    2002 VW Golf refurb

My GTI (1.8T) had something funky they called a “dual mass flywheel”, don’t know if the 2.slow had the same or what the implication would be. I never had it apart so I can’t really speculate but could it be something stuck in the release mechanism maybe the slave cyl?? D

I think he mentioned something about a clutch needing to be replaced so the tranny will need to come out. D

    2002 VW Golf refurb

Cool, good to see they arrived in one piece. Happy to see they went to a good home. I wish we had talked about the grilles, I have a set here. We could talk off line about that & other stuff too. D

    2002 VW Golf refurb

First thing to look at for the ABS code is a broken wire on the speed sensor. Good question on the engine. I don’t know about OBD11 but if their forum is anywhere as good as Ross Tech’s then you should be able to mine for decipherization of the fault codes and fixes. D

    2002 VW Golf refurb

As a VCDS user I hope you share some of your experience with OBD11. I bought into VCDS when it was the only show in town. At my latest decision point I traded in my old VCDS for the newest one because I felt I was “invested” enough at that point. I’d be interested to hear about using their...

    Really ?

Put me down as a belt believer as well. There was a day when I participated in oval track racing and things happen. In my case I had bruises from the belts but nothing more so the system worked as intended. I was indoctrinated young, my father installed belts in the family car ‘way before...

What is the best thing to clean Carb’s with a ultrasonic cleaner

There are a couple of flavours of Simple Green tailored for aircraft use so they do not attack aluminum. Simple Green FAQ: Aluminum D

    Terrible QC - Toilet Edition

Well isn’t that timely. I just went through a round of “repair the toilet”, a Toto. The good? All three work well and have done so for the last 15 years so no real complaints there. The bad? The flapper lift lever mechanism. The arm from the pivot slides out and eventually falls to the...

How to Clean a Granite Surface Plate?

Same here, speaking of measuring flatness that is. Dunno, that’s not the impression I got. The guy with the CI lap seemed to think he got better than AA with it by mapping the SP and concentrating on bringing the highs down to meet the lows thus making it all planar. Craftsmanship in action...

How to Clean a Granite Surface Plate?

I had a look at the bottom and I didn’t notice any evident mount points. I would imagine they trued out 3 or 4 corners so it would sit on a plane without rocking. Interesting point. I don’t know about the re-lapping as certification. Even if you re-lap you’d need to know how flat you...

How to Clean a Granite Surface Plate?

Sure, you have to get a good clean start! Ok, let’s be fair, the first layer will be a wooden cover, then let the filing begin! The cover serves two purposes, protect the plate and as a carrier for the sediments above it when ya just gotta get at the plate. ;) D

What about the surface finish? Shiny? Matte? Sorta shiny/sorta matte? D

How to Clean a Granite Surface Plate?

Mine is an 18 x 24 x 3 and that’s at least heavy enough! No certs but anything that’s more than a year old would be out of the cal cycle. If it wasn’t hobby use since new then all bets are off on whether it’d pass. I’ll probably noodle around a bit to see if I can figure out how the “old...
