    Eclipse

I spent a couple of hours at Susquatches location, I finally met the man himself :) My and families first totality viewing, despite less than perfect conditions it was a very memorable experience. One thing we noticed was a loud "boom" like thunder during the totality. Did anyone else hear that...

    Tramming KBC mill question.

Is that lower round piece part of the casting or is it a separate ring?

    DRO Heck.

Your DTI is set at an angle, that's going to affect the amount moved, do you have a clock type indicator you can use to give perpendicular reading? Or, place a 0.010" feeler gauge under the tip, zero it pull it out, move the table to zero again and see what the DRO measures.

    Tool Optical Centre punch.

In another life, before fancy accurate machines, I was taught to "box" my holes in using a height gauge. Draw a line above and below the centre point and both sides. Drill using the full-size drill and you can see where the drill is cutting, apply a bit of pressure to the part to move the hole...

    Shop heat

Getting back to Shop Heat for a minute, does anyone have experience with Chinese diesel heaters in their shop? My "shop" is only 140 square feet, I have an electric oil heater but it takes hours to warm the space sufficiently to work in. I used a propane heater but with too much moisture my...

What size lathe do you have?

I have a 7x Chinese lathe, my last steam engine build had a 6" flywheel and it was a challenge with my limited-size lathe and minimill. I've been looking at other casting builds and some of them have 8" flywheels, another challenge that I'll embrace with gusto. I have 2 choices as regards the...

    Shop heat

When I left school, early '60s I worked for a while at a company called Road Rollers, they rented the machines out to contractors. When they came back to the yard they were brought into the shop for service. Most of the big ones were diesel engines and hand-cranked from the back end. You can...

How do I make a Star Trek replicator?

Do you know any dentists? They have a scanner thingymabob that they use to scan your teeth, I had this done when I was in to get a cap for one of my teeth made. I watched to on the big monitor that they have on the wall, very impressive.

    Vevor vises....quality?

I only have half a bottle. Worked at a factory that had mercury vapour lights, when the electricians changed out the dud ones I'd go and grab them out of the bin, break them open and pour the mercury into a container. My mind is still as sharp as it's ever been, at least since yesterday.

    Threading - 29.5/30 vs 90

When I was in college I was taught both methods with the advisor that 30-degree method is the accurate method, there is less loading of the part, especially if a small diameter part. 90 degrees can and will dig in but is adequate for most applications. the calculations differ but are available...
