  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Ontario GTA West area meetup is planned for Saturday April 26th at Greasemonkeys shop in Aylmer Ontario. If you are interested and haven’t signed up yet, click here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. CA-ON Bentone 34 or other “organophilic” clay?

For the record, I used Green Diamond blasting sand (130 mesh) from Foundry Supply Source, the Pangel B10 organoclay mentioned above, Propylene Carbonate from Alphachem as a catalyst, and two different oils. I used Motomaster SAE 30 non-detergent from Canadian Tire in one batch, and Laser...

CA-ON Bentone 34 or other “organophilic” clay?

Thanks! So far, so good, at least. As I say in the video, there’s something about the process that I need to understand better. Just throwing the ingredients in the muller, one at a time, didn’t quite work. I had to add a little more of A, and then a little more of B, etc. Although it...

CA-ON Bentone 34 or other “organophilic” clay?

Hi John. I’m using a DIY muller, made out of a beer keg and some steel boules. If you look for “Ogmios Forge” on YouTube, my two most recent posts are the build video for my muller, and testing the sands I made with the organoclay I mentioned above. Patrick

CA-ON Bentone 34 or other “organophilic” clay?

Happy Victoria Day everyone! The long weekend afforded me the time to run my DIY petrobond through its paces, with some liquid bronze. Happy to say, it worked well. The 50 mesh sand was only so-so, but the 130 mesh batches (one with SAE 30, the other with synthetic 2-cycle) worked quite well...

CA-ON Bentone 34 or other “organophilic” clay?

Hi folks, OK, so I spent a bunch of time over the weekend, playing with this Organoclay I found online. First of all, caveats: I’m no expert at this. If I say something dumb, please correct me! I’m no scientist. I tried to be precise with measurements, etc. but it was not a “six sigma”...

CA-ON Bentone 34 or other “organophilic” clay?

Hi Philip. My own plans are to produce a DIY petrobond-style sand, for casting bronze items. Sand is easy to find, and cheap. Oil is easy to find, and cheap. But as others have found, the challenging ingredient is the powdered organoclay (e.g. Bentone 34) that binds the oil and sand...

CA-ON Bentone 34 or other “organophilic” clay?

Hi Tobho, thanks for the info! I’ve now received the product, and will be experimenting this weekend. I’m going to mix up a few small batches with fine silica sand and a few different oils (clear mineral, SAE30 non-detergent, and 2-cycle) and see how they work. Should have something more to...

CA-ON Bentone 34 or other “organophilic” clay?

Small update: package got through customs, and UPS charged me another $36 for broker fees, etc. Still, on the way!

CA-ON Bentone 34 or other “organophilic” clay?

Shipping for 1kg of the stuff was by UPS, and cost US$50, which seems reasonable for the weight. No indication of what/if tarriffs were involved…

CA-ON Bentone 34 or other “organophilic” clay?

OK, I may have some success to report…and I think the following is all accurate from a technical standpoint… Aside from Petrobond 1 (Bentone 34), there was also Petrobond 2 (Bentone SD-1). Either one was added to sand and oil, to make oil-based casting sand. P2 though, was “self-catalyzing”...

    Kerrihard power hammers?

Hi gang! Just wondering if there are any other owners of Kerrihard power hammers on the site? In particular, I’m hoping to discuss experiences adjusting/using/repairing them! Patrick

    Hello from Toronto!

Aware of, but not connected with. Ancient history, Sumer, the Bronze Age, that’s my inspiration. The SCA is too modern ;)

CA-ON Bentone 34 or other “organophilic” clay?

Inhaling most things in the shop is bad for you, but as Johnwa pointed out, the silica powder is extra-double-plus bad…
