  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Looking for milling machine purchase help/advice

Honestly, don't rule out used machines based on New machines, especially lower cost ones (i.e. asian imports), can have just as many issues as a used machine. Since you are in the GTA, it shouldn't be too hard to get someone with experience to help you check out a used machine (I'm up in Ottawa...

    Mikes shop activities

Added a new toy to the garage, should complement and not distract from metal work (I hope). Its had a respray in its life but was done quite well, too hot to really get under it today (37°C without the humidity factor) but no rust holes in anything I can reach and nothing readily visible. Needs...

Ottawa area BBQ and Swap Meet August 30, 2025, 11am to 3pm

30th is probably better for me, leaves the rest of the long weekend for whatever.

Allright - Frankie is alive! Laid the Craftex on its side and removed the head, hauled it to the basement. Laid down the Delta and took off its head. You can see the previous owners hack job on the quill handle, what you can't see is the oval hole for it in the head casting (worn out). Mated...

Yeah right, yesterday. I can't remember yesterday. No, I do need to get going on this project, only because the new to me drill press is in the garage, and I've just made a handshake agreement to become the owner of fairly nice 2002 MX5. Fortunately the car is about the size of a golf cart...

    2002 VW Golf refurb

They're still big money out here too for ones that Fred Flintstone can't pedal. Only get cheaper after 160000 kms or salt exposure or both

    2002 VW Golf refurb

Funny enough I've been eyeing a new to me project car like a Miata. My brother has a '68 MGB and while fun, its too much work to keep roadworthy and too hard sourcing spares, plus not nearly as refined a driving experience.

    Bandsaw worm gear

have a go at it, about 1/3 the way down this page is someone making a homemade worm gear, can read how he did it. https://www.modelenginemaker.com/index.php/topic,12310.150.html My only concern is that a brass blank would cost me $80 around here - its priced like its colour - gold!

Workplace Safety at work and in the home shop

Yup, when you are screwed back together with deck screws and reinforcing plates you know you done good. I'll spare the pic of my ankle hardware but was 3 plates and 21 screws to put this humpty dumpty back together after my trip over the handlebars of my bike... the last things I remember...

I've been thinking over (over thinking?) the repair that is needed to the table of the Craftex CX610 drill press I just bought. I need a few bits of steel that I don't have and some time to put it together. Or I can Frankenstein the Craftex and the Delta to do what I wanted in the first...

Ottawa area BBQ and Swap Meet August 30, 2025, 11am to 3pm

Are you close to choosing a date? No pressure, but even my light social calendar can have an occasional item added and I'd prefer talking machines and metalworking than listening to chit chat between the ladies about some entertainment thingy or other.

    Really ?

w.r.t. user manuals and warnings, I saw this sign on my trip to Ireland, and I wondered... just wondered... really - your head?

    Real estate listings suck

If I want reasonable prices, I need to get well out of the city like @Warlock suggested. That needs the approval of the better half. Its also tough, in that I think I still want to be close to town, not completely out there. Proximity to family plays a role in picking a spot, otherwise I...

    Real estate listings suck

Since I started this thread I've shifted gears and I'm now researching vacant land instead for a place to build. Whole new set of issues to watch out for: zoning restrictions, setbacks, soil types and slopes, flood plains and wetlands, rights of way and easements, utilities available, nearest...
