• Scam Alert. Members are reminded to NOT send money to buy anything. Don't buy things remote and have it shipped - go get it yourself, pay in person, and take your equipment with you. Scammers have burned people on this forum. Urgency, secrecy, excuses, selling for friend, newish members, FUD, are RED FLAGS. A video conference call is not adequate assurance. Face to face interactions are required. Please report suspicions to the forum admins. Stay Safe - anyone can get scammed.
  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Tips/Techniques When does an electrician need to get a permit?

Doesn't necessarily need to be CSA approved, UL is also acceptable - see here: https://esasafe.com/electrical-products/recognized-certification-marks/

    Wanted: 6" 3 jaw chuck, D1-3 mount

If getting a new to you chuck, I suggest the kind with keyed / interchangeable jaws. The inside outside clamping is done by removing the attaching screws and flipping the jaw around. New jaws are available if ever needed, and you can also easily mount soft jaws that are machined to suit the...

    Improving Runout on keyless chuck?

Could be tolerance stack up - what is the chuck mounted to? An MT3 or similar arbor? There is the fit of the chuck to the arbor, and the arbor to the lathe/drill press/ etc. Could even be the machine that has developed runout (we hope not but possible). If that is the case then clocking it...

Tips/Techniques LEGAL non harming booby traps for thieves

Makes you wonder - is it really a high crime neighborhood because that's where the criminals are located(crimes of convenience), or high crime because they know that neighborhood is free game (targeted by criminals) as far as the police goes - i.e. if you pay more taxes and have better political...

    PathPilot interface enhancements

@gerritv I too am interested in what you come up with for PathPilot interface. I have the touch screen, a keyboard and the Shuttlexpress but think it can definitely be improved upon.

    Worn nuts for mill leadscrew

BTW, I'm late to this thread so sorry about that. I have a bar of 2" and 2.5" dia Ertalyte (PET-P) that I could lop a chunk off to be used for a leadscrew nut if your bronze efforts don't pan out. Ertalyte is similar to acetal but "better".

Facebook scams - is it even OK to contact a potential scam? Looking for a car lift.

Thanks, just locked down FB quite a bit more than it was. I'll just not waste my time on scam "sellers" then, and I'll have to keep my scam radar on high alert. I don't really care if someone buys and flips something I'm selling for 2x the price, shame on me for not knowing the market value if...

Facebook scams - is it even OK to contact a potential scam? Looking for a car lift.

What I'm really wondering is if I contact a seller that I think has a high chance of being a scam, what am I giving up other than my time if I don't give any money over? Is there something else they're collecting about me that I need to know about? I've been perusing the Facebook marketplace...

Let's talk about RAP - retained accessory power

Something else to consider - different car type but similar issue. I had a 2013 Mazda CX-5 do this, its fairly common on them, push button start. The switch that detects "park" gets old and a little rubber snubber compression sets enough that you think you turned off the car completely but you...

Tips/Techniques LEGAL non harming booby traps for thieves

Have an audible alarm trigger a message that is very loud and followed by a count down timer starting at 10, "releasing poison gas", then, just so they don't get too brave and think you're bluffing, have it release a really strong fart gas. They might think twice about what they inhaled (should...

    Tips/Techniques Measuring tapes

When I was working on a full blown cottage reconstruction, I was in Canadian Tire and they had a clearance on some Stanley 8m/26' tape measures at $3.99 each or some ridiculous price. I bought all they had - about 8 of them. Was still cheaper than just 1 of the bigger more expensive ones. My...

    Iron Casting

I need to learn more about iron and castings, but if I'm wanting small castings with thin detail areas of only a few mm's (spokes on 2" wheels), then its almost certain they will have chills in them. Does it matter, if the area with chills isn't going to be machined? Does it lead to fractures...
