  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Ontario GTA West area meetup is planned for Saturday April 26th at Greasemonkeys shop in Aylmer Ontario. If you are interested and haven’t signed up yet, click here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. One hour for grinding the 26 inch long C10x25 section, ie 10"x26" including machining the flanges parallel to the section surface. Rate is $130 per hour. Have since asked for a quote on two pieces 3/4"x5"x26" and 1/2"x8"x13"to be ground on both surfaces. Both quoted at 1/2 hour each. Will keep...

I did what Stuart suggested and took the piece to Oldensteel. Haven't got it back yet - but then I did tell them it wasn't urgent. Appreciate your offer Martin, might just take you up on it depending of the workmanship I get back from Oldensteel.

I was considering using an epoxy, however, the steel still looks a it did coming out of the factory, slag and all. Don't think epoxy onto slag is a good idea.

I'm trying to figure something like that out but I'm still building my mill - that's what the base is for. A bit of a chicken and egg situation. May end up rigging up something that can do the job. Agree that SG isn't necessary.

If someone has a large enough mill I'd be more than happy to supply the face mill and inserts.

Hi All For the base of my DIY mill I have purchased a large piece of C-section steel. C10x25 26 inches long. The C-section is 10" wide, 26" long, web 0.526" and flange 2.886". 50lbs. https://www.advantagemetalservices.com/materials/carbon-steel/channel-chart/ I need the surface made suitably...

I had a look at what you did. Way over my skill, budget and competencies. I plan on using my mill - once it's up and running - to build some tools as well as some of the supports that I would need for a solid EG base.

I have found Barrymounts to be able to work wonders: https://novibration.com/ You may have to put in some thought and be willing to experiment to find the best size and location though. Alternatively, tennis balls might be useful. My team was using an optical platform to evaluate a stabilised...

As to what I expect of my mill: Roughly the performance regarding accuracy speed and rigidity equivalent to a standard manual Sherline or Taig. Support of full three axis CNC control in an envelope of at least 150mm X 150 mm X 200mm. In time I would like to add a fourth and potentially...

At my school there was a single span concrete pedestrian bridge that spanned a four lane highway. At the middle of the bridge was a lamp post mounted to the ground about a meter from the bridge. This served as a handy reference for the height of the bridge above the road. All it took was two or...

From which I deduce, amongst a number of other insights, that, while I need to keep my options open as far as possible, it will make a big difference whether I am using a relatively light, high speed spindle or a large (by my standards) R8 based spindle that will likely spin at about a third or...

I plan on initially using a Taig spindle, perhaps with higher speed bearings and modified for an ER20 collet. For power I'll try the 400W brushless or a 1hp DC motor off an old tile saw. Depending on how that goes, or just for the hell of it, I am considering a modified version of the Little...

Thank you for your input. Yes, I'm building with what is available. The mechanical bits were mostly purchased on ebay. The 400W spindle motor came along with the two smaller steppers for free; that's why it is currently the spindle motor - essentially by default. I do understand that it is...

Thanks for your thoughts. I like the idea of using epoxy granite / cement and initially agreed with your suggestion of the 1/4 inch plate. However, and this is not criticism but more how I'm iterating towards a solution, I have decided to use either 0.625" or .750" thick plate because I want to...
